Smith reportedly died of what appears to be a self-inflicted knife wound. But police are not ruling out foul play in their investigation. He reportedly had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse. 

Smith was best known for his solo career which reached it�s zenith in 1998 when he was nominated for an Academy Award for his song �Miss Misery� from the film �Goodwill Hunting�.  He first came to prominence in the Portland Oregon indie-rock scene as a member of the Heatmiser but his real breaks came after he launched out as a solo artist. 

Smith was recently working on material for his sixth solo album. DreamWorks released Smith�s last studio album 'Figure 8' in 2000. He released two singles earlier this year on Seattle based indie-label Suicide Squeeze.
