Kelly Osbourne is getting a brutal lesson about trends and the entertainment media; When youre hot, youre hot. When youre not, youre not. Kelly seems a bit peeved at MTV. The network that made her a media darling in the first place no longer appears to think shes hot and is reluctant to air her new video for the song Come Dig Me Out.
Kelly landed a record deal following the major success of the first season of the Osbournes on MTV. However, the second season ratings took a nosedive as the novelty wore off and the episodes revolved around the media frenzy and instant fame of the Osbourne clan from the first season, not to mention an overdose of Kellys singing and coverage of Sharons battle with cancer.
Although at this point it does appear that the Osbournes will return for a third season, Kelly is finding resistance in her role as a wannabe singer. MTV refuses to put Kellys new video into heavy rotation (during those few hours a day when the network actually shows videos). She had a temper tantrum of sort during a recent interview with The Detroit News where she complained that the network that gave her fame now is reluctant to help her keep it.
"MTV makes me sick to my stomach," Kelly said in the interview. "Did you know they only play 35 videos a week? It's so stupid. MTV used to be all about breaking new artists. Now, if you're not in a rap group, if you're not talking about 'I f***ed the cutest girl in school' or if you're not singing about skateboarding, you can't get played."
Kelly makes a valid complaint about what MTV does play, however there are far too many real artists with a lot more talent that are getting ignored by MTV. She shouldnt feel so bad now that the network wants her to live up to her album title and shut up.
One thing Kelly fails to mention is that MTV tends to push the limited number of best sellers on their network. Popularity brings in advertising dollars and while millions tuned into the Osbournes every week, people werent running out to the record stores to purchase Kellys music as her debut album has only sold 134,000 copies since it hit stores last November.
Its a bitter pill to swallow but Kelly tried to put the best face on it after complaining that MTV was ignoring her and thus not helping to sell her CD she contradicts herself in the same Detroit News interview. "I honestly don't care if I sell any albums," she claimed. "People don't see me as an artist, they see me as a television star. And I don't care. I don't care if people take me serious as an artist."
Well at least she isnt too delusional about her proper role in the entertainment universe.
