Expand your mind Craig Ahoy shipmates on the ship of fools. Things are getting strange in the pair of sheds I do my workings in, strange indeed. And I like it. My recent musical love has been music of the dance sort, just writing that invokes such a powerful stigma; it shakes me to the very core. Just the name dance music makes me think of horrible Scandinavian exports. Sure they produce some butt kicking metal bands, but their ability to make horrible dance music surpasses even the most tr00est of metal bands. Aqua is more evil than any death metal band, in fact I believe Dani Filth is bald fella in aqua who said cmon Barbie lets go party, the wig is not fooling anyone there Dani. And let us never forgive them for the infamous, Ace of Base. But enough of the bad, let us look to the good for a second. A friend turned me on to this stuff, the same guy who has shown me the light on other stuff such as Current93 and the Rezillos so I once again entrusted my ears to his care, soon a tape of all sorts of stuff was in my hot, grubby paws. I rushed to the shed to greedily consume this new lomtick of music all on my oddyknocky. Most of the bands there I had never heard of, but Prodigy was a familiar face, I liked the few singles they released back when, and who couldnt love the video for Smack My Bitch Up? Possibly one of my most favorite videos ever. Also another familiar face though only for one song was Aphex Twin, whom I only knew about from the very strange video for Come to Daddy. One cannot easily forget those rather ugly children, but other than that one track, the rest were all new. Ive also learned of KLFs deeds, but never their music. Anyone mad enough to burn 1 million pounds is worthy to at least give a chance. So in the shed I sat down in my trademark 80s drug dealer decor chair and let the tape play. And soon it reminded me of the very first time I played the copied Operation Ivy tape that a friend sent to me. It was exactly like that, a light went off in my head, flashing with the intensity of 6 Bill Cosbys on speedballs, the mind raced, the pulse quickened, every drunken vision of Christ playing poker with the dogs in the famous tapestry suddenly came back to me in a rush of sheer musical pleasure. Yes it can be said I liked the music immensely, though if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Aphex Twin for the oddness of the music, especially bouncing a ball, which has the sounds of. . . Bouncing balls, there is a steady rhythm to the bouncing, the creativity of this I find very inspiring. Now where ever I go its likely you will hear Londons Burning and born slippy back to back in the outing. In short , this has been a revelation to me, that Ive been missing out on a lot by pretty much restricting myself to music that is familiar, and never really branching out further than the punk, ska and reggae which Ive carved a comfortable niche for myself. So this month its a tribute to finding new favorites to join those I already had. Make this months article a drinking game, each time the mental image of aqua pops into your head, take a shot of booze, and if you can name where the title of this came from, you get to drink the whole bottle. this one from a 14 punker girl who asked him if he wanted to...)
