Well here I sit, late at night, listening to Sgt Pepper sipping my mati mayans, and thinking that there will never be a band like the Beatles, or as big as the Beatles ever again. When John said they were more popular than Jesus, he wasnt just saying this for shock value, but it was the damn truth. There will never be another Beatles, mainly because times have changed so much. And music fans of today are so loyal to there respective music styles, that no matter how good a band is, the majority wont like them, just because they arent punk, or metal, rap or any of the number of sub-genres each of these terms has spawned. Besides, even though the Beatles just rehashed old American r&b, and rock at first, it was a new spin on the old subjects. As of today pretty much all that can be done, has been done. The Beatles were true artists, experimenting with all kinds of instruments, and styles, if a band tries that today, for the most part they are labeled sellouts, or posers. Actually I doubt if the Beatles were just starting today, in the same way, singing pop tunes, and then moving on to( for lack of a better term) real music. Nobody would buy into the idea. This would be like Hanson becoming real musicians, and playing songs with meanings other than mmmbop, yeah I know I should be lynched for that analogy, but its the best I can come up with to get my point across. Lets face it I wanna hold your hand isnt the most intelligent song written by the Beatles. But unlike the pop acts of today, they did write it themselves; it wasnt churned out by some mass song-producing machine. The music world today is too cynical, too jaded to allow another Beatles to survive. This may not be up to par with my groundbreaking mullet article, but its my first one for the column, so go easy on me, -_-_-_-GREENMUSE |
