"What's it gonna be, eh? There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs. Pete, Georgie, and Dim. . . ." so starts Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece of a film version of Anthony Burgess's masterpiece of a book: A Clockwork Orange. Clockwork Orangeis a powerful film, the images, the words spoken, and the music fit together in such a way that it sticks in ones head long after being viewed. Who has heard "Singing in the Rain" or Beethoven's 9th Symphony (especially "ode to joy") the same way after seeing this film? Certainly not I. Apparently not other people either, the odd thing is some bands have taken this film/book's images, words, and music and made it their own. Bands such as major accident and the addicts used the appearance of white outfits and black hats (though monkey of the addicts looked more the part of a jester) both did covers of ode to joy and used many nadsat words in their songs. Rob Zombie did "Never Gonna Stop" which referenced the film in its lyrics and in the video. (I say film as Alex and the boys did not wear white outfits and bowlers in the book at any time.) One of my latest reviews, the Templars made a whole EP called Clockwork Horrorshow (I don't know if their other works are Clockwork influenced) . Now, what makes this ok? . Shouldn't a band who takes their persona and material be something horribly lame? The answer should be a resounding "yes"!, but oddly it works and isn't lame. Can you picture any other films used in this way? How about a Deliverance influenced band? They could be called "banjo kid and the inbred 5" every album would feature a rocked up version of dueling banjos. Granted this imagined band would be funny as hell, but would never be taken seriously. Much less have a hardcore following like major accident. Or perhaps a Star Wars themed band? Wookie, they could be a metal band and do the imperial march theme. (one of the best film themes ever) , dress in storm trooper gear and really go all out with it. . . . . Nope, still ends up looking kinda dorky in the minds eye. I hear there was a band fashioned after the band in "Rock N Roll High School" but I haven't seen anything of them yet. Supposedly they look just like the band in the film it would appear, that this phenomena is distinct to Clockwork Orange. All I know is it's a damn fine film and book. Viddy well little brother, viddy well. This month's song of the month is "War
Boots" by Major Accident.
