The 35th anniversary of the Black Crowes' "Shake Your Money Maker" album is being celebrated by the syndicated radio show In The Studio With Redbeard: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands.

Redbeard shared this synopsis for the episode: "With Shake Your Money Maker we thought we would make our one album, you know, and then talk about it the rest of our lives", sardonically says Black Crowes singer/songwriter Chris Robinson. The never-reticent frontman was joking about the unheralded January 1990 debut which, for fifty-four consecutive weeks, punched way above its weight class until peaking in the Top Five best-sellers in America. At the time, the Eighties pop-metal hair bands were starting to wane due to mousse abuse, and the Grunge guys were in the on-deck circle. The Black Crowes sounded as if the late Small Faces/ Humble Pie dynamo Steve Marriott had gone on holiday to Paris and dropped in on the Rolling Stones sessions while recording Exile on Main Street . While 2024 was marked by a string of new monthly singles and their first-ever U.S. mini-tour, rising European dark wave/synth-pop duo Close to Monday is kicking off the new year on a reflective note with their majestic rendition of Duran Duran's iconic pop track, 'Come Undone.' This release honors the band's roots while showcasing their ability to merge nostalgic sounds with modern sensibilities. The idea for this cover came from a deeply personal place. The band's vocalist Ann recently rediscovered an old video of herself as a child, dancing to the sounds of Duran Duran's original song. That memory of youthful joy and inspiration became the foundation for the cover and its accompanying artwork, featuring her childhood image that connects her past and present as a musician.

"Recording this track felt like coming full circle," says Ann. "Duran Duran's music was a soundtrack to my youth, and this cover allowed us to honor that influence while layering our own voice and perspective onto the song." (continue)

Alt rockers VIOLET NIGHT just released their new single "Does It Even Matter?", and to celebrate we asked Connor Pohl to tell us about the brand new track. Here is the story:

When we first wrote "Does It Even Matter?", it started as a simple acoustic demo-a song I (Connor) felt good about but wasn't entirely sold on. Sometimes, songs take a while to reveal their true colours. In VIOLET NIGHT, we have a dynamic where collaboration always brings something special. Tay, who has this uncanny ability to hear potential in things I might overlook, brought in the beat and drum parts, and suddenly, the track came alive. The same thing happened with our song 'wallflower' on the A N TI H E R O E S album. Initially that song was a super sombre kind of vibe and then the drum beat Tay injected gave it a much needed shot of adrenaline. With DIEM (Does It Even Matter?, duh), from that moment, it was clear we had something great. Sometimes as a writer I'm too close to the songs and that outside birds eye view is everything. Tay and I share this perfectionist tendency, not in a destructive way, but in the sense that we set the bar high and hold each other to it. That push and pull created something we're incredibly proud of. (continue)
