ZZ Ward has released her latest single, "Mother," heralding the start of a profound new chapter in her career with Sun Records. This unique and deeply personal blues track tackles ZZ's own experience of motherhood, a perspective rarely explored in the genre, marking ZZ's return to her blues roots with an authenticity and depth that's compelling and transformative. The song's raw emotion is complemented by ZZ's signature wailing vocals and searing lead guitar solos, creating an intense and deeply moving soundscape. "That's a mother's cry," ZZ explains. "It's that feeling of being weighed down with this new situation. I never expected men to hear it and relate, but I've heard more than a few feel it, too."

One of the most profound lessons ZZ learned from growing up listening to the blues greats was to be authentic to her story. "I didn't plan to make a blues song about motherhood," ZZ shares, "it just sort of happened naturally. I've always written to get through things in life. Suddenly, I was faced with a new job that's 24/7 with no breaks, and that's what I wrote about. But when you get tested, you discover who you are, and this song comes from a feeling of empowerment." The song is imbued with the blues influences that have been a constant in Ward's life, from the Chicago blues stylings to the gritty, heartfelt vocals that define the genre. (continue)

Elemental Music's ongoing LP reissue series the Motown Sound Collection continues with the release of three more classic titles from the Detroit label's archives: the Jackson 5's Get It Together (on red vinyl, with a die-cut cover) and the mono editions of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles Make It Happen and More Hits by the Supremes on August 16, 2024

JACKSON 5's Get It Together: Produced by Hal Davis and issued on September 12, 1973, Get It Together might be seen as the Jackson 5's first adult album, as Motown made a major attempt to craft a more mature image and style for the family group, whose first hits landed in 1969 when they were still youngsters. In particular, lead vocalist Michael Jackson was then 15 years old and sporting a deeper but still mercurial voice, which he used to great effect on the album's title single. "Get It Together" roared to No. 2 on the national soul/R&B chart (becoming the group's highest-charting 45" in two years) and No. 28 on the U.S. Hot 100. It prefaced the smash "Dancing Machine," heard in its original version on the album; the subsequent edited single (No. 1 R&B, No. 2 pop) also led to a like-titled 1974 album. (continue)

The Kunes Clark Band, Jimmy Kunes (Cactus, Humble Pie) and Angus Clark (Joe Lynn Turner, Trans-Siberian Orchestra), just premiered their debut single "Step Up Step Aside" and to celebrate we asked them to tell us about the track. Here is the story:

Angus: "Step Up Step Aside" was one of the last songs to be written for the Kunes Clark Band album. We already had a variety of stuff for the record, some of it we wrote years ago, but we didn't have anything really up tempo, so we were looking for a vibe. I immediately went to Hendrix, thinking of something like "Fire", or "The Rocker" by Thin Lizzy. And that stuff requires a massive guitar riff. So I had an idea of the rhythmic feel, tempo, and so on, I just needed a MASSIVE RIFF. (continue)
