The 55th anniversary of Chicago Transit Authority (later just Chicago)'s self-titled debut album is being celebrated by the syndicated radio show In The Studio With Redbeard: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands.
Redbeard shared the following synopsis for the episode: Chicago Transit Authority was both the name of the band as well as the 1969 eponymous first album title. The original band Chicago Transit Authority was so good, in so very many ways, that it blew away all of the conventional wisdom about what a rock band could be. These seven musicians were so uncommonly talented that their debut in 1969 required it to be a double album! Chicago's line-up then was led by under-recognized triple threat singer/songwriter/guitarist Terry Kath, bass guitar/vocalist Peter Cetera, drummer Danny Seraphine, trombonist Jim Pankow, trumpet player Lee Loughnane, sax and woodwinds by Walter Parazaider, and keyboardist/vocalist/songwriter Robert Lamm. Sohodolls continue their comeback with the brand new single "Mother Wouldn't Like It", which is a light-hearted punk pop atomic bomb about teenage rebellion and getting up to no good on a Friday night with your mates, with thick, driving riffs that stab and bounce with mischievous glory. Sohodolls really know how to write catchy riffs, hooks and lyrics and all are abundantly on display.
"I wrote this song with another band that I was friends with back in the noughties" says Sohodolls' Maya Von Doll. "When their band disbanded, I asked if I could have this song and tweak it to make it Sohodolls. I've had it on hold for years and years but feel that now the time is right to unleash it. I wonder if the menacing guitar riff will captivate listeners the way it used to captivate me when I'd watch my friends' band play in dodgy London venues where you'd have beer crates form the stage", she adds. "Cloud 9" is a song I loved as soon as Aaron Gillespie (of Underoath and The Almost) showed it to me, I absolutely loved it and I was excited at what I knew we could make it. It originally was brought in for a different project, and from that batch of songs, "Cloud 9" was one I wanted to keep. The song is co-written by Aaron along with Ned Houston and Dan Swank. "Cloud 9" was produced by Aaron Gillespie, mixed by Matt Huber (Smallpools, Boys Like Girls), and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer, Adam Grover (Green Day, Zach Bryan).
