Scorpions have paid tribute to their former drummer James Kottak, who passed away at the age of 61 on January 9th in Louisville, KY, according to his daughter Tobi, who confirmed his passing to TMZ.
Kottak was the longest serving drummer for the German hard rock group Scorpions, spending two decades with the group from 1996 through 2016. He is also known as a founding member of Kingdom Come. (continue)

In 1977 Gentle Giant recorded their ninth studio album "The Missing Piece." It was a time of change. Punk, disco and rap were altering the musical landscape and even this well-established progressive rock band were willing to explore new directions. Side one saw them experimenting with quirky pop ("Two weeks in Spain"), a grandiose power ballad ("I'm turning around'), syncopated funk ("Who do you think you are?") and even the punky aggression of "Betcha thought we couldn't do it." Meanwhile the call and response soul shouting of "Mountain Time" hearkened back to the "big sound" of their Simon Dupree R & B revue days. (continue)
On this Day in Rock in 2011 a top story was about a Ronnie James Dio bandmate revealing that the famed vocalist might not have died if he'd had a medical check-up while his bandmates had theirs, said his friend and bandmate Geezer Butler.
Dio died of cancer in May of 2010 after a six-month battle against the disease. But Butler says the frontman had stage-four stomach cancer by the time it was discovered, and it was already too late for him. (continue)

The appearance also marked Metallica's final concert date of 2023 as part of its ongoing M72 World Tour; the group has been on the road promoting its latest release, "72 Seasons", which they recorded at their own HQ in San Rafael, CA in 2021 and 2022. (continue)
