Matt Tiegler recently released a music video for his song "I Wanna Start A Religion", from his new album "Hands Free Down Hill", and to celebrate we asked him to tell us about the track. Here is the story:
"I Wanna Start a Religion (With You)" is a song that I had started a few years ago. Some songs come to me like a crashing wave and I try to write them down and record the initial version the same day that the inspiration hits. With this song, the music and first verse were basically improvised and immediate. Fortunately, I recorded that verse and years later sat down to hammer out the rest of the tune.
Religion is such a daunting and touchy subject to write a song about, so I tried to make it into a conversation between two people so I could more freely express my thoughts. The idea of starting a religion is pretty ridiculous, and yet all of the 4,000 + religions in the world were started at some point. (continue)

The full moon, Saturday 28 October, sees the release of the penultimate track of Peter Gabriel’s new album i/o. This month the song is And Still and the first version to be heard is the Dark-Side Mix, by Tchad Blake.
Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, And Still is arguably one of the most skin-prickingly personal songs that Peter Gabriel has ever written. It is not just an elegy, it’s also an exploration of the nature of memory: how it tethers us, how it secures us.
‘I wrote a song for my dad a number of years back, which I was actually able to play him, which was ‘Father, Son’. When my mum died, I wanted to do something for her, but it's taken a while before I felt comfortable and distant enough to be able to write something. (continue)

After an 8-year hiatus, Ben Davis of the experimental indie-pop group Bad Veins has emerged from his attic-based studio - a space filled with a 1970s Mattel Optigan electronic organ, a megaphone, and his trusty reel to reel recorder named “Irene” - carrying with him the band's third album, 'Imposter.' Set to be released on December 1st via Dynamite Music, 'Imposter' is being hailed by Davis as possibly his magnum opus.
“I do think it’s the best record I’ve ever made, but there is a reluctance for me to even admit that,” he laughs. “I am in constant fluctuation back and forth as to whether I want to be a public person, or just keep to myself. I had no career ambitions when I first started Bad Veins. I just enjoyed making music in my attic. So, there is always the feeling of ‘imposter syndrome’ when I have to do music business type things.”
True to Bad Veins' signature style, the album promises a blend of pop subversion with classic influences. From synthetic woodwinds and choirs, lo-fi textures, to the infectious hooks of 1980s new wave synths, 'Imposter' takes listeners on a unique musical journey. (continue)
Neal Morse has announced his new album, 'The Restoration - Joseph: Part Two' - the highly anticipated follow up to 2023's 'The Dreamer - Joseph: Part One.' The first single from part two of his latest rock opera is "Cosmic Mess", out today along with a new music video.
'The Dreamer - Joseph: Part One' concluded with Joseph unjustly imprisoned. In 'The Restoration - Joseph: Part Two,' the biblical narrative unfolds, chronicling how Joseph's wisdom and intelligence led him to become the viceroy of Egypt and, to the eventual reunion with his family.
Commenting on the new single, NEAL had this to say: “It doesn’t sound like it, but 'Cosmic Mess' was written on the piano. I think it was toward the end of the writing process on Joseph, and I was thinking it would be good to have another prologue sort of song. One of my main takeaways from the Joseph story is that it was necessary for all the terrible things to happen to Joseph to put him at the right hand of pharaoh, so that he could feed/save the whole world and be reunited with his family. So that’s what I am singing about in the chorus… The darkness must come in order for the light to fully show up. Anyway, I played all the instruments on this, including the drums, and had a fine time doing it.” (continue)
Madness have unveiled the brand new single “Baby Burglar.” The song is the second offering from their 13th full length album Theatre Of the Absurd Presents C’Est La Vie out November 17th via BMG.
The latest track once again highlights the band’s faultless ability to create ineffably catchy pop music, this time with an underlying helping of majestic gloom. A theme that’s ever present on the upcoming LP. Baby Burglar recites Lee Thomson’s true-life tale of being burgled, told through Madness’ signature witty lens. The bossa nova beat of a vintage Yamaha organ helps to enliven the tale, as Suggs sings “I once trod in your creeping footsteps”. Lee has said the song’s take on the home invaders is more sympathetic, recognizing his own youthful straying from the straight and narrow.
Talking about Baby Burglar, Madness said “The story behind Baby Burglar is actually quite a funny one…it's about Lee finding a midnight meddler loose in his house and how it reminded him of his younger self and all the shenanigans we used to get up to when we were whippersnappers. Not long now until you can hear the whole of our new album Theatre of the Absurd presents C’est La Vie” (continue)
