Day in Rock Report for 07/21/2023

Roger Waters today confirmed October 6, 2023 as the release date for The Dark Side of the Moon Redux, an epically ambitious reinterpretation of one of the most famous and acclaimed albums in history, fifty years on from recording the original with Pink Floyd.

The album's lead single, Waters reinterpretation of 'Money' is out today with accompanying lyric video. Recorded by Pink Floyd when Waters was just 29, The Dark Side of the Moon was an extraordinary multidimensional meditation on the human experience, the passage of time, descent into madness, and the abyss. "The memories of a man in his old age - are the deeds of a man in his prime"

As foretold by its opening line, The Dark Side of the Moon Redux sees Waters transcend this half-century void to reinterpret and embellish his original creations with a new perspective gleaned from his own life experience, philosophy, and the wisdom of age, with added emphasis on the philosophical, social and political themes of the original. Bay Area staple alt pop group Finish Ticket have taken fans, and themselves, on a rollercoaster ride throughout their career with a whirlwind of highs and lows. After creating a wave with sold-out shows across the Bay Area and their debut album Tears You Apart, they were picked up by Atlantic Records who released their debut EP When Night Becomes Day and were seen touring alongside the likes of Ed Sheeran, Twenty One Pilots, Fall Out Boy and AWOLNATION. The band also made key festival appearances including Bonnaroo, Life Is Beautiful and Kaboo, in addition to making their debut late-night TV performance on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien." In 2019, FINISH TICKET self-released their hit track "Dream Song," which garnered over 2.7 million streams and saw the band embark on a successful headlining tour, selling out multiple venues across the country. Then COVID hit in 2020 and put everything to a halt.

After spending the past three years writing and recording their second full-length album (title TBA), FINISH TICKET signed a record deal with Better Noise Music. Today (July 21), they've released the first new music with the single, "Changing," marked by an irresistible melody, nostalgic guitar riffs and affecting self-questioning lyrics. He lives in that truck," Alice says. "In the song, this surreal tough guy is driving on white lines for his whole life. So, 'White Line Frankenstein' would be his CB handle. It's monstrous and definitely a stage song." (continue)

P.J.M. Bond released "Big Two-Hearted River: Part II", a special EP with three songs inspired by Ernest Hemingway's "In Our Time" today to coincide with the legendary author's birthday. To celebrate, we asked P.J.M. to tell us about the EP. Here is the story:

"Allow me to introduce myself: my name is P.J.M. Bond, a songwriter based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. For years I dreamed of putting a literary work to music, and after writing my MA thesis on the work of Ernest Hemingway, I realised that his short-story collection "In Our Time" (1925) would be perfectly suited for such a project. I set to work and wrote a song for each of the 17 stories included in the volume. An elephantine task if I may say so, and one that had its very own unique and peculiar challenges. Although I did not have to think of a track listing (after all the order of the stories in the century-old volume was set in stone), I still had to consider the mood for each song and how they fit each individual story, and more importantly, the complete album had to be listenable as a single fulfilling musical piece, even if you had never heard of Hemingway before. Tamar Berk just released the new single "if u know, u know," from the forthcoming album, "tiny injuries". To celebrate, we asked Tamar to tell us about the track. Here is the story:

Usually when I write a song it starts with either a lyric line or a chord progression. In this case, it was kind of a weird combination of both. I was still dealing with the aftermath of my father's death and had to help my mom sell her home, pack and move into an apartment. (continue)
