"On the surface, this song is about all the 'trickster' characters we know from our favorite childhood stories like Anansi, Monkey King, Joker, and, of course, Loki," says Annie Kuchenmeister (age 22, guitarist and singer) of indie-punk sibling band Loki's Folly about their new music video, "Trickster," which is out today on Kitten Robot Records. "These are characters we love for how they force others to question themselves and define what is good for them. On a deeper level, it is about facing tough challenges that maybe you don't really want to go through but that teach you more about who you are and what kind of person you're going to be."
"Trickster" follows the release of their "Don't Come Back" video (about escaping a toxic situation or relationship that you recognize in retrospect) and their high-spirited "Beaches and Peaches" video - the latter of which the band (comprised of Annie, Nissa: age 17, drummer and singer; and Oskar: age 12, bassist and singer) explained to Teen Vogue was chosen "exactly for its silliness." Katie Jacoby, the violinist and singer-songwriter known for being the touring violinist with The Who, has shared her cover of T. Rex's "Cosmic Dancer." The track features an all-star cast of musicians including Scott Metzger of Joe Russo's Almost Dead, LaMP and WOLF!, Dave Dreiwitz of JRAD and Ween, and Josh Dion of Paris Monster, as well as a string quartet with Katie leading on violin. It was recorded at Restoration Sound in Brooklyn, NY by Lorenzo Wolff.
"I've always been a fan of Marc Bolan and T. Rex, and I think 'Cosmic Dancer' is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Tony Visconti's gorgeous string arrangement is a big part of that, and I love how the lyrics straddle both the playful and the profound," says Jacoby. "In my rendition, I wanted to capture the original analog warmth of the track while also highlighting the strings." (continue)
New Jersey rockers Sekond Skyn recently released their new single "My Head". To celebrate, we asked lead vocalist Jesse Shar to tell us about the track. Here is the story:
I was in a toxic relationship with someone who had completely taken over my life. Under the guise of a solid stable partner, she slowly started to control everything I did.
Ranging from what I ate and drank to who I associated with on a daily basis.
Tracking me by GPS on my phone and sharing social media accounts. I was too close to the flame to see obvious red flags. Family and friends noticed something was off. (continue)
