Metallica has unveiled the title track of its forthcoming 12th studio album, 72 Seasons. A seven-and-a-half-minute opus that opens the new record, "72 Seasons" is the fourth advance offering from its namesake-following the recent release of the "If Darkness Had A Son," as well as the "Screaming Suicide" and first single "Lux AEterna."
"72 Seasons" sets the tone for the expansive and unrelenting 12-song, 77-minute album. The Hetfield/Ulrich/Hammett-penned epic is nothing short of an embodiment of the concept behind the new record's title, as previously detailed in James Hetfield's own words: "72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told 'who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry." (continue)

In a recent interview with Ultimate Guitar magazine, veteran drummer Carmine Appice kicked up a dust storm when he lamented the fact that a certain stadium metal group had been relying on pre-recorded tracks in their live show. In retaliation, the bassist for said metal group referred to Appice as a "washed up drummer." But as a member of numerous pioneering classic rock bands like Vanilla Fudge and Cactus, often dubbed "the American Led Zeppelin," as well as longtime collaborator with Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck and a host of others, Appice has had more than his fair share of stage experience and knows the kind of chops it takes to command a stage show.
Even now, after 5 decades in the music business, Appice continues to release new albums and break new ground. His most recent project, a pairing with superstar guitarist and producer extraordinaire Fernando Perdomo, is about to unleash a brand new studio album titled Running Up That Hill. Set for release on May 26, the album consists of fiery rock instrumentals, featuring special guest performances by Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big, David Lee Roth), Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater), Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets), Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (Guns N' Roses), Tony Franklin (The Firm), Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne, Vince Neil) and more! These profiteers drain the ecosystem of water, ultimately unleashing a vengeful entity that destroys everything. Deerhoof's statement echoes this ominous warning: (continue)

NYC Sludge Rockers Netherlands are releasing their new album, "Severance" tomorrow (March 31st). To celebrate we asked Timo Ellis to tell us about the title track. Here is the story:
Our latest single, SEVERANCE (also the title track of our new record) came out of a spontaneous guitar playing session at my studio, within my normal practice of just pressing record and f***ing around/ seeing if I'm able to channel anything decent. In this case, the song's main lumbering riff emerged and seemed to be worth following, worth developing; throughout that initial session it fully evolved into (another) one of what I would call our down-tempo "minimalist doom" numbers; a song without a particularly sophisticated intention, mostly meant to create a hypnotic effect....and with as massive/ menacing of a guitar sound as I can muster.
