Carbon 9 is a production band that generally writes songs in the studio, but "My Friend" was one of the songs that was created by letting loose as a group in the band's rehearsal facility. As we constructed twenty eight songs for the new album, (only to allow ourselves room to cut down to the top fifteen), "My Friend" was one we just couldn't let go. In rehearsal I kept singing the words, "My friend, my friend", and I really wasn't certain what it meant. I am one of these people that believe in a purpose for everything and I contemplated the value of this lyric constantly reoccurring in my head. I was struggling with the value of a current relationship I was engaged in and it soon made sense. Living in Los Angeles and working in the entertainment industry, no different than any other industry, I soon came to the realization that the energy and aggression of this song was being driven by my personal emotions referencing this relationship. There are so many people that we encounter in our lives that actually bring value to our everyday experiences, but there are also a few that are in it for themselves. "My Friend" is about these people! The ones that call you their friend and actually make you think they care but really don't give a s**t about you.

"My Friend"is directly about that one person that constantly stabs you in the back yet we continue to keep them close within the circle. They generally do this to keep themselves feeling powerful and in complete control, while we gloat in the knowledge and wisdom that we know exactly what they are doing and therefore we are better than them. It may be a sadistic thought; to be better than another, but are all men really created equal?
