Gary Reynolds and the Brides of Obscurity Week: Day 2 |
This is one I've had hanging around for a while. It was written on the acoustic guitar and had a kind of old school blues feel to it. I tried to record it for the "Instant Happiness" album but it didn't turn out. So we redid it when we were working on the EP and put an entirely different spin on it. Once again, it didn't fit on the EP but it worked out beautifully on "Santiago's Vest" It's the song that has pulled the band in a new direction. I was singing something like, "and in the morning I'll arrives" but I didn't like it, so when it came down to crunch time for lyrics I thumbed through some magazines and I pulled out "insiders guide" and " high speed drive" from an ad about cars or hair spray or something and it kind of sparked the whole lyric of the tune.
Now it's up to you to be the ultimate judge, go grab a listen to their songs and see if you agree that this is an exciting new indie release. Samples, tour dates and more about the band can be

Idol Calls On Real Stars For Charity Show |
Idol producers enlisted some other big names to take part (as well as some throw-aways that will be forgotten in a few years. Though Paula won't go away.) Here is part of the official PR on the event with hyperbole included: This year's event will be bigger and more ambitious than ever, and will feature incredible international talent including Bono, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Fergie, Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood, Annie Lennox, John Legend and Snoop Dogg. Additional artists scheduled to appear to be announced.
The star-studded evening will echo the success of last year's IDOL GIVES BACK, which raised over $76 million for various U.S. charities that deliver support to underprivileged children in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the country, providing them with medical care, food and grocery products, health and life skills and literacy programs, among other important initiatives.

Nine Inch Nails Seeing Ghosts |
Ghosts I-IV was conceived as an experiment: Following the conclusion of 2007's Year Zero album, alternate reality game and touring campaign, Trent Reznor enlisted Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder with help from Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew and Brian Viglione to create spontaneous, impulsive soundtracks to daydreams with no agenda or release date, only a self-imposed 10-week time limit. Rob Sheridan collaborated with Artist in Residence (A+R) to create the accompanying visual and physical aesthetic.
The end result is a wildly varied body of work released in its entirety with no label-imposed limitations--musical, physical or otherwise.

Slash and Marc Canter Discuss Early GNR |
This was the first-ever joint interview the two have ever done and, in addition to the print interview, they also shot a couple videos which are posted along with the interview transcript. There are some great stories in the interview including Slash's first meeting with Axl.
For those unfamiliar with Canter, Erin had this in the intro to the interview: Mark Canter unknowingly began to document the rise of the greatest rock band of its time: Guns N' Roses. Over twenty years in the making, Marc's new book, Reckless Road: Guns N' Roses and the Making of Appetite for Destruction, is a collection of exclusive interviews, rare photographs and original memorabilia including show flyers, magazine articles, ticket stubs, set lists, and hand-scrawled song lyrics. From the band's first gig at the Troubadour in 1985, to signing with Geffen Records, to being dubbed "The Most Dangerous Band in the World," Marc Canter was there, up close and personal, camera and tape recorder in hand.
