Top Stories of 2008 So Far...
antiMusic reports: Hard to believe the year is half over. But it is. So as we celebrate the 4th of July, we're taking a look back at the top stories from the first half of 2008. Today we look at the stories that created a buzz in Jan through MarchEnjoy the weekend and we'll see you tomorrow with the top stories from April through June and we'll be back with a brand new update on Monday!
AC/DC Farewell Tour?
antiMusic reports: Are the Thunder From Down Under ready to pull the plug on their legendary career with a final album and tour? That's the rumor according to a Metal Underground report. The rumor was sparked when the host of "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM said on Friday night that word has it that Australian hard rock legends AC/DC will embark on a "farewell" tour later in the year once the recording sessions for their new album have been completed.

More from the Metal Underground report: AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams told Spinner.com last month that AC/DC would enter the studio March 1 to begin recording its first new album in eight years. The web site caught up with Williams at the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp in Los Angeles, where he said, "God I'm ready."

As for touring, however, Williams was less sure about the group's intentions. He explained, "If we go out again or when we go out again, you just never know. We've been around a long time, so we're going to get together and get in the studio and I fully expect we will (tour). I don't mean to be so negative about that." - more on this story

Stone Temple Tantrum Spells End of Velvet Revolver?
antiMusic reports: If, as Duff suggested in a recent interview, Velvet Revolver are really the frontrunners to support a reunited Led Zeppelin on tour, it looks like they will have to do it with a new vocalist. Weiland reportedly shocked fans from the stage at the band's show last Thursday when he told the crowd "You're watching something special... the last tour by Velvet Revolver." The proclamation promoted a response from drummer Matt Sorum, which in turn prompted one of Weiland's famous tantrums... oops "statements".

When Matt Sorum took to the web on Friday to discuss what went down, he said in part, "My career and life in rock 'n' roll has come with its ups and downs. Unfortunately, some people in this business don't realize how great of a life they have. Touring the world, meeting great people and fans all over the world. And just playing music for a living. I feel truly blessed. But sometimes the road can be draining for some. Being away from home and family does grind on you sometimes. With all the travelling and different beds. Personally, I love this sh*t and sometimes can't believe I am so lucky to still be doing what I do for a living. Everybody could see who was unhappy last night, but all I can say is let's keep the rock alive, people!!!! In this life, you just pick up and keep moving. And don't ever let anybody stand in your way."

Weiland took offense and sent Blabbermouth one of his venom filled tirades: "Well, first of all, the state of my family affairs is really none of his business, since he is too immature to have a real relationship, let alone children. So don't attempt to stand in a man's shoes when you haven't walked his path. Secondly, 'keeping rock 'n' roll alive?' I've made many attempts to remain cordial with the members of VR, but mainly, the likes of you. Funny though this is your FIRST band, as opposed to being a hired gun. I've been making records (now on my ninth), which have sold over 35 million copies worldwide and have maintained a level of professionalism regardless of how many drugs I've ingested into my system. I have only cancelled one tour during the entire course of my 16-year run and that was the 'make-up' Australia tour. Now, shall I open that can of worms, Matthew? Release the Kraken? Serve... Volley! You cancelled the Aussie tour in the fall because you went to rehab, but I won't say why we'll just let Blabbermouth find out for themselves." He goes on from there.

What about the future of Velvet Revolver post Weiland? One rumor suggests that Brett Hestla from Dark New Day may take over vocal duties. The other big rumor is that this may open the door to a Guns N' Roses reunion. The Hestla one seems far more probable. We'll have to wait and see. - For now read Sorum and Weiland's full comments at Blabbermouth and enjoy Scott's Jr High moment when he discusses STP!

Zeppelin Address Reunion Tour Yet Again
antiMusic reports: We couldn't let a week go by without having a story about a member of Led Zeppelin discussing the possibility of the band doing a reunion tour. Today we have a story from Uncut Magazine about not one, but two members giving us our requisite reunion comments! Here is what Uncut had to say: Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant has said that there is a chance of more one-off live perfomances from the band, if the reasoning was right.

Speaking in the new (May 2008) edition of UNCUT magazine, the Zep singer, commenting on the huge success of their December reunion show at London's O2 Arena, said: "Hopefully, one day, we could do it again. Our profit is - it's metaphysical."

The group's bassist John Paul Jones added: "We (Jones and Page) spoke afterwards, and we both thought the same - it felt like the first night of a tour. You think, 'Oh, I could do that a bit better, or change something in that song.' And we didn't get a chance to do any more."
- Check out the Uncut article which includes a link to watch the ENTIRE reunion performance.

Van Halen in Trouble?
antiMusic reports: In today's edition of fun with Van Halen rumors we hear some interesting tales of Wolfgang taking on a biker gang single-handedly at bar in North Carolina, causing the band to cancel two concerts. Ok we made up the biker gang thing, but the rumor making the rounds had the young Van Halen getting into a bar fight. Something the bar says didn't happen. The band did pull shows last Friday and this Monday. We're waiting to hear back from their rep to see if they have a public comment, but here is one of the stories that is circling around for your entertainment. (Maybe the band will use this rumor in a video if they make a new album? Imagine Wolfgang staring as Bruce Lee!)

TicketNews.com has this :"Van Halen's fan website reports what it calls a rumor: 'We have had two unsubstantiated reports from the Charlottesville area that the members of Van Halen were in a bar called Rapture on Thursday the 21st, and it was reported that Wolfgang got into an altercation with someone, which precipitated fighting within the band at the nightclub. It reportedly got heated and apparently this caused the abrupt postponement of the shows in Charlottesville and Atlanta.'"

Charlottesvillenewsplex.tv had additional info on this. The bar in question confirmed that members of the band's road crew did go there- not members of the band, let alone the underage Wolfgang. "But the bar says there was no altercation and Rapture had nothing to do with why Van Halen canceled the show. Van Halen says that the concert has just been postponed and they will reschedule." - more on this story

Hannah Montana Does Something Naughty
Hecklerspray reports: Unlike Vanessa Hudgens, Miley Cyrus ha never taken a picture of her minge and put it on the internet. And unlike Jamie Lynn Spears, Miley Cyrus has never been knocked up by some bloke she met at church. But beneath that butter-wouldn't-melt smile there's a heart of darkness beating inside Miley Cyrus, if this new report is anything to go by.

Miley Cyrus didn't wear a seatbelt in a car once. We know, we're just as shocked as you. So shocked that we'll let USA Today fill you in on the rest of the details:

In a blog item posted Monday, Consumer Reports magazine says 15-year-old superstar Miley Cyrus, who plays Hannah Montana on television, is seen in her new movie riding without a seat belt in the back seat of a Range Rover. So is her father, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus, the Yonkers-based magazine says The magazine says 65% of the 13-to-15-year-olds killed in auto accidents in 2006 were not wearing seat belts. "It seems to us that Miley, her father and Disney had a perfect opportunity to help influence teens and counteract rather than encourage this trend," the blog item says.

Axl Wants More Cash?
antiMusic reports: A new report has it that Axl Rose is holding his new album hostage over cash. We now know that Guns N' Roses have completed "Chinese Democracy." On January 10th we reported on the rumor that it was done. That was confirmed by UK magazine Classic Rock, who spoke with Axl's personal manager, Beta Lebeis, who said that the album "was finished before Christmas." Adding that "Everybody knows that." She also said that Axl is currently "in negotiations" to set the release.

The rumors were reported on originally had it that Axl had turned the album in to the label, but the parties had yet to come to terms on the marketing. We were unable to confirm this and have yet to hear back from the GNR camp or the label. Though some GNR faithful are citing an email from guitarist Richard Fortus to a fan as confirmation that the label has the album. A few fans have emailed us about this email, but we have not seen the text. Now a new report says that it's all coming down to Axl wanting more money.

Blabbermouth reports that: "W. Axl Rose is negotiating for more money with his record label before he will release the masters." They cite recent reports about this, but we could not find them. And they did not provide any direct sources for this "spin" on the story. - This unsourced claim runs counter to what Tom Zutaut said in a letter to the New York Times

John Lennon's Final Interview Coming to DVD
PR reports: The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder: John, Paul, Tom, Ringo is finally available on DVD April 1st. This 2-DVD set first aired in 1973 and includes the last televised John Lennon interview and additional interviews with Ringo and Paul.

On April 25, 1975, John Lennon gave what was to be his last televised interview on "The Tomorrow Show With Tom Snyder." No one knew then that Lennon would be taking an extended hiatus from public life, taking time to raise his son and live a less public life. Speaking openly on the subjects of drug use, the breakup of the Beatles, and his immigration problems while seeking permanent residency in the U.S., the interview Lennon gave Tom Snyder in 1975 revealed he had tremendous humility and an affecting sense of humor.

Five years after that interview, Lennon was fatally shot while coming home from a recording session. The day after the shooting and Lennon's tragic death, "The Tomorrow Show" re-aired that last interview in tribute to him. Shout! Factory's "The Tomorrow Show With Tom Snyder: John, Paul, Tom And Ringo" contains the complete interview with Lennon as rebroadcast on December 9, 1980, along with interviews from that day with journalist Lisa Robinson and Lennon friend and producer Jack Douglas. - more on this story

Kill All Emos
Blabbermouth reports: According to La Crnica de Hoy, several hundred Mexican heavy metal, "skate punk" and alternative rock fans joined forces last Friday (March 7) in the in the center of Quertaro, Mexico to confront a group of "emos" (followers of the "emo" subculture, which is short for "emotional") who regularly use the city center as a gathering place. Four people were injured and 28 persons were arrested (22 of them minors) when more than a thousand youths clashed in the area of Jardn Guerrero, Plaza de Armas (front of the Government Palace).

Authorities in Mexico are reportedly concerned that similar incidents could happen in other cities, especially Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.

An Internet campaign is reportedly being waged to launch attacks against "emos" in other parts of the country, with various web postings portraying emos as "homosexuals" who give a "bad image" to tourists who visit their towns. - watch the video footage

Bon Jovi's Sambora Slippery When Wet Driving Bust Also Child Endangerment?
TMZ reports: Richie Sambora could be criminally charged with child endangerment. Richie Sambora was busted for DUI with 10-year-old daughter Ava in the car, along with another juvenile and another adult -- a woman. If Sambora was driving drunk, he could be charged with endangering the two kids.

Police sources tell us Sambora has not been charged with endangerment but the Laguna Beach P.D. is "actively investigating."

And, police sources say, after Sambora was busted the cops called Heather Locklear, Ava's mom. We're told Heather authorized the other adult in the car to drive her daughter home

Britney Vocal Fraud?
antiMusic reports: What follows is clearly hearsay, but won't come as much of a shock to most people. It appears Henry Rollins may have discovered the real reason why Britney Spears lipsyncs at her concert-- the voice on her albums is fully Britney. In equally shocking news we learn that water is wet.

According to Jam!, Rollins told Sun Media that a studio engineer let him in on Britney's dirty little secret. "They have the black chick come in and sing, and Britney sings over it, and they mix them together," Rollins said.

"(Britney) gets her phrasing basically from this older R&B woman. I found that out talking to an engineer. Britney apparently isn't actually the worst singer, she just has no feel. So they bring in this older black woman who sings the song, then Britney sings to it, and they kind of make a mix of the two voices, and that's what you hear on the records."

5th Beatle Dies
antiMusic reports: The "Fifth Beatle," Neil Aspinall, died of cancer at the age of 66 on Sunday night in New York City. Aspinall was a longtime friend of the band and began working with them as a driver and eventually ascended to the head of their company Apple Corps Ltd until he resigned last year.

According to Transworldnews "Aspinall's involvement with the Beatles dated from 1960 when the group's original drummer, Pete Best, asked him to become their driver. After Best, Aspinall's best friend, was replaced by Ringo Starr, Aspinall stayed with the band.

AFP adds, "In 1968, he became manager of Apple Corps, reportedly on the condition that he would only do it until they found someone else. He only left the job last year." - more on this story

Axl Under New Management, Scott Weiland's
antiMusic reports: It's a small world after all, it's a small world after all. At least in the Guns N' Roses universe. You see Axl has signed with a new powerhouse management team, after recently ditching Sanctuary. The small world comes into play because Axl's new management also handles Velvet Revolver's Scott Weiland. Blabbermouth has Axl's statement and a bit on Weiland connection:

"I am very pleased to announce that GUNS N' ROSES and I are now represented by the management team of Irving Azoff and Andy Gould. We are very excited and look forward to working with them and hope our relationship proves beneficial for everyone, especially the fans."

It should be noted that up until recently, Azoff Music also managed VELVET REVOLVER, the band featuring Axl's former GN'R bandmantes Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. Azoff is continuing to represent VR's singer, Scott Weiland, an Azoff spokesperson confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET. - more on this story

Maxim Review Fraud Doesn't Fly with Black Crowes
antiMusic reports: It appears that fake music reviews go hand in hand with fake porn. Who knew? Apparently Maxim Magazine got caught writing a CD review for an album they never heard and then tried to justify it by explaining that they just wished to cover a big release and having not heard it didn't really matter. They made an educated guess! Here is what the Black Crowes had to say about the whole mess: How is it that a magazine can review an entire album--and assign a star rating to it--without actually hearing the album?

Case in point: the "review" of Warpaint--the new album by THE BLACK CROWES--in the March issue of Maxim magazine. The writer--who has not heard the album since advance CDs were not made available--wrote what appears to be a disparaging assessment anyway, citing "it hasn't left Chris Robinson and the gang much room for growth."

Incredulously, the magazine gave the album a two and a half star rating--although neither the writer nor the editor could have heard more than one song (the single "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution"). When approached for an explanation, the magazine described the review as "an educated guess preview." Huh? - more on this story

KISS Sex Tape
antiMusic reports: KISS's Gene Simmons likes to brag about his sexual conquests, he even has a Polaroid collection of his encounters with groupies. So you would think the marketing savvy Simmons would have already released a sex tape on his own, so that he could cash in on it. But it looks like a Panamanian company has beat him to it.

Sleazeroxx has the story: A sex video allegedly featuring Gene Simmons was released Tuesday at GenesSecret.com. Photos on the site promoting the sex video show the couple going at it in several positions, with Simmons keeping his shirt on and Elsa wearing lingerie.

The site's video still show a man who appears to be Simmons - bassist for the rock band KISS and star of the reality TV show "Gene Simmons' Family Jewels" - having sex with a woman identified as an Austrian babe named "Elsa," a spokesmodel for Frank's Energy Drink. Simmons reportedly endorses the drink. - more on this story

Avril Not A Thief Just Unoriginal
Jam! reports: A pair of U.S. songwriters who accused Avril Lavigne of ripping off one of their tunes now say the songstress did nothing wrong.

Last summer, Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer alleged that Lavigne's boppy track "Girlfriend" sounded suspiciously like the Rubinoos 1979 single, "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend."

On Tuesday, Lavigne's record company Nettwerk issued a statement from Dunbar and Gangwer in which the two men said: "We are satisfied that any similarities between the two songs resulted from Avril and Luke's use of certain common and widely used lyrics."

Grohl Joins Zeppelin as Band Book US Fest?
Gigwise reports: Dave Grohl is reportedly waiting on a very important phone call, an invitation to go drum on the rumoured Led Zeppelin reunion tour.

Apparently the Foo Fighters man is desperate to take control of the skins for anymore shows the band might play despite the fact that he praised Jason Bonham's performance at the O2 Arena show.

According to one of those people that seem to know everything the insider Grohl was also in the running to take Bonham's role at the London gig.

Metal Underground has this report Mirror.co.uk can exclusively reveal that LED ZEPPELIN - who staged a triumphant "one-off" gig at the O2 this month - will be the headline act at the Bonnaroo festival in the US next year. The festival runs from June 12 to 15 in Tennessee - and if all goes smoothly they may even hit the road and tour.

An insider told us: "This is the news that will drive their fans absolutely wild. They have been bombarding their website to get back together for good but only Robert Plant wasn't keen to commit. Now he's had a change of heart and if it goes well they are also talking about touring." - more on this story

GNR Finish CD?
antiMusic reports: The latest rumor swirling around Guns N' Roses is that the long over-due "Chinese Democracy" is complete and with the label but a new battle has emerged that is causing further delay.

We don't know how much stock to put into third or fourth generation rumors, but the word on the street is that Axl has turned in the CD to Geffen at long last but no release date is in sight because Axl and the label can not agree on the marketing of the album.

Are we closer to Chinese Democracy? We have no idea but we are hopeful. We have yet to hear back with the official denials or "no comment" from the GNR or Geffen camp but we'll keep you posted on what we hear officially or hearsay. Again this is all but rumor at this point , besides rumors are more fun than official news anyway. - read the follow up where this was confirmed
