Pierre de Reeder (Rilo Kiley) Week: Day 5 |
Young & Old - I remember the melody for this song first rattling in my head when walking the street of Athens, GA. It was just that at first, a melody, along with the first line of the song. I didn't really develop it for a while, but was glad that I'd noted the melody on the little voice record of my cell phone.
And strangely enough, I added parts here and there kinda doing the same thing... thinking of lines or parts and jotting them down on my phone. I remember a good part of it I put down the caverness sounding bathroom at The Orange Peel in Asheville. Needless to say, we were on tour at the time. But what finally came of this song reflects a lot my own thirty-something kind of experience.

Not many habitual criminals can get away with using the F word when talking to a judge but if your DMX you get special justice. He was also ordered to pay a $483 court fine and return for a follow-up hearing Oct. 3. To which DMX could be heard replying to the judge, "I ain't coming back on f--king Oct. 3." And for today's "utterly useless tabloid crap you can't use" we turn to pseudo-tabloid Fox News: "Project Runway" fashionista Tim Gunn says Miley Cyrus' style is "just a little too tarty." (Miley Cyrus) is just a little too tarty, forgive me. I don't want her to look like she's going into a convent school, but it's just a little too much for a 15-year-old. If I didn't know better, I'd swear she was 25," Gunn told OK! magazine. Not enough? You can read Gunn's frivolous opinion about other people as well. Drop some IQ points and click here for that.

Has Metallica really returned to their roots?"If you could timewarp back to 1983 with a copy of 'Death Magentic' in your hands and play it to the spotty, longhaired brats who'd just finished recording 'Kill 'Em All', they would have no problem at all recognizing themselves in its epic song structures, jaw-dropping guitar work (all buzzsaw guitars and face-melting solos) and sheer whiplash-inducing energy. In fact, they'd probably be impressed. That's right kids, for once, you can believe the hype: 'Your' Metallica are back and they've brought their balls with them this time. So says this review
Last but definitely not least, Sonic Youth have begun work on a new album. The band recently completed their contract with Geffen through the release of Rather Ripped in 2006, and will be returning to an independent label.

The US Jam |
The rock legends are joined by Russell Hastings on lead vocals and guitar to complete the trio's line-up as From The Jam. Fans will be able to enjoy the band's brilliant hits, including "This is the Modern World," "The Eton Rifles," "'A' Bomb in Wardour Street," and Going Underground," brought back to the stage with vigor by the scissor-kicking Foxton and crew.
Drawing inspiration from The Who and the Sex Pistols, The Jam fused a punk-rock sensibility with the classic mod sound and became one of the most influential acts to come out of the UK. During the band's five-year span, The Jam's moody lyrics connected with disenfranchised youth in songs like "Down in the Tube Station" and "In The City." The power trio kicked off the late 70's mod revival and inspired a legion of British rock bands from The Smiths to Oasis. Current acts like the Kaiser Chiefs, The Futureheads and Supergrass prove just how relevant The Jam remains.

The Number Twelve Looks Like You Being New CD |
The Bergen County, NJ five-piece will be self-producing their next effort at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, NJ. The as-yet-untitled disc will be mixed by Steve Evetts (Every Time I Die, Dillinger Escape Plan) and is tentatively schedule for an early 2009 release on Eyeball Records.
"It's that time again! Time where the geese run wild in the open studio and the waves of music stir up another tsunami," says vocalist Jesse Korman. "That's right, we are back with a new musical roller coaster record that will be sure to harsh your mellow. We have crept outside of our box to write the MOST unlikely #12 collection yet. We are ready to have new riders journey the coaster with us and have our ever-so-loyal fans show them where to vomit."
The Streets Returns in October |
Applying his homespun hip-hop sensibility to real instruments, Mike comes up with sing-a-long musings on such unconventional subjects as religion ("Alleged Legends"), evolution ("The Way of the Dodo"), biological destiny ("On the Edge of a Cliff"), and male friendship ("The Sherry End").
From the first time people heard The Streets' Mercury Prize-nominated debut Original Pirate Material, they couldn't make their minds up whether the person making this music was black or white, from London or the Midlands, serious or a joker. Having given the world plenty of time to get acclimated, Skinner now rediscovers his old irrepressible buoyancy and takes his trademark stop-start lyrical flow to entirely new places.

Singled Out: F5's "Love is Dead" |
"Love is Dead"...when I first heard the music I thought, "Thanks a lot Steve (F5's guitarist). This is screwedwhat can I write over this riff?!" But, after I actually digested the arrangement I found it easy to write to. The premise is very straight forward. "Love is Dead to me...I am numb like you expected me to be."
I hate judgmental people. When you beat me down with your own insecurities, I will become the very thing you detest. Leave me the ---- alone and maybe I won't let you down.
Now here is David Ellefson: This is one of the last tracks written for the album in the 11th hour before we commenced the recording session. Our guitarists John Davis and Steve Conley literally wrote the riffs in the studio and then laid them down to a click track just hours before Jimmy DeGrasso walked in to play drums to them!
As a result the song has a more complex arrangement with tempo shifts, probably because we couldn't streamline it by rehearsing it to death in a band room for months on end. It has a very old-school, metal vibe about it which is made clear by the opening and middle section guitar riffs. It's one of my favorite tracks on the album!
Sounds good huh? Sounds even better when you actually hear the song. Now that you know the story behind the track, go to the following link to check it out and learn more about the album and band, then grab a copy "The Reckoning" for yourself.
