Laurel
Aitken RIP |
punkbands reports: London's Club Ska is reporting
that at 8 am this morning Laurel Aitken, widely acknowledged as the 'Godfather
of Ska' and affectionately known as 'Boss Skinhead,' died of a heart attack
at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, England. Aitken was born in Cuba on
April 22, 1927 and moved to his father's homeland of Jamaica in 1938. In
1957 he began his recording career with the single "Roll Jordan Roll."
The double A-side "Little Sheila" / "Boogie in my Bones" was the first
single released on Chris Blackwell's Island Records, one of the first ever
ska records, and the first Jamaican recording ever released in England.
Aitken relocated to the U.K. and recorded numerous hits throughout the
60s. He was later acknowledged as "an elder statesman to the Two Tone ska
revival movement of the punk era" (AllMusic). [see full story for more]-

Alice
Cooper Reunion? |
Rock N Roll Universe reports: In an exclusive
interview conducted by Rock N Roll Universe, original Alice Cooper dummer
Neal Smith states that the doors are always open for a reunion of the original
Alice Cooper Group. When asked about the prospects of a reunion, Smith
has the following to say:
RNRU : How realistic is it for fans to
hope for any kind of reunion?
NS : All I can say is there's always a
chance that something can happen. Realistically or not, nobody's ever going
to know. Let's put it this way, as long as I'm alive, I will always be
one of the people trying to negotiate something that maybe could make that
happen. Whether it's putting the right elements together, or helping the
right elements or if the elements were put together that I would be there.
Dennis and I have always offered to talk about a reunion since the band
broke up. I told Alice in '75, if you ever need my help call me, and in
1985 he came up to Connecticut and he did all the pre-production work for
the 'Constrictor' album at my studio at my home with Dennis and I and Kane
Roberts, who played guitar on it. Our doors are and have always been open.[see

Green
Eyed Soul |
Harper PR reports: Grammy Award-winning Nashville-based
singer/songwriter Lari White, best known for her chart-topping string of
90's country hits, makes a sharp turn with the July 26, 2005 release of
GREEN EYED SOUL, a truly amazing collection of soulful songs, including
the first single, the gospel-blues tune "Right Here, Right Now" and the
funky "Let's Keep It Together." GREEN EYED SOUL marks the debut release
from her Sony/RED distributed record label Skinny WhiteGirl.
Released to rave UK reviews in June, 2004,
the album reflects Lari's lifelong R&B and gospel influences. She set
forth in the studio to reach inside herself and what tumbled out was a
sweet blend of soul, Southern Americana and jazz that she calls GREEN EYED
SOUL. Here, she blends classic soul and R&B sensibilities with modern
technology to tackle subjects such as love and the loss of innocence, conjuring
up heady images of languorous, sultry Southern nights.
With a July 26, 2005 release date, Lari
is planning a flurry of stateside shows: [see full story for dates]-

Penitentiary
Blues |
conqueroo reports: The first release from
the Shout! Factory/HackTone imprint is David Allan Coe's long-lost debut
album Penitentiary Blues a record so outlaw it was written behind bars.
While serving his eighth consecutive stretch in prison, Coe wrote a batch
of songs that brought death row into the home of anyone with guts enough
to listen. Songs like "Cell #33," "Oh Warden," and "Death Row" are delivered
with such a sense of desperation, they could have come only from a man
on the inside. Though out of print for decades, Penitentiary Blues is very
close to Coe's heart and he is deeply involved in the CD debut, acting
as executive producer and contributing to the packaging and marketing of
it. Penitentiary Blues will be available on August 23 with a suggested
retail price of $18.98. [see full story for more]- Click
