The Scam Really Does Work
antiMusic reports: Some were a bit shocked last week when Hilary Duff landed at No. 1 on the U.S. album sales chart with a greatest hits collection. Especially when you consider that Ms Duff has only released two albums previous to this.

After a couple of "tongue in cheek" stories yesterday about new compilations from Blink-182 and Savage Garden (another one that only released two albums) we received several angry emails informing us of many things (aside from the senders' lack of taste). According to several Savage Garden fans the compilation will include "a couple" of new tracks (that were not recorded by the group but for a solo album by one of the members, which may or may not appear on said members solo album plotted for release shortly after this groundbreaking "hits" collection.)

These emails aside from providing comic relief and informing us that we are jealous (of what, we do not know) did unlock the heart of the greatest hits scam and why labels get away with it. Almost every person that wrote in informed us that they planned to purchase these greatest hits albums. So you can see why the labels do it, they already own the rights to most of the songs, they toss in a few throwaways from previous recording sessions that we not good enough to make it on the studio albums, a bad cover tune or two or cuts from a "forthcoming" album and get the fans to pay full price to buy the music all over again. When you think about it, it is genius. So antiMusic salutes the record companies for this brilliant way of separating the fans from their money, which we believe was first perfected by KISS. We do leave you with this: first) we did research and despite some rumors we learned that Blink-182 and Savage Garden are in fact two separate groups. Second) fans that fall for this scam do not like to have the point that it is a scam pointed out to them. Third) we tried this repackaging scam with this article and if you are reading it, it was successful. Stay tuned for news on the Lindsay Lohan, Kelly Osbourne and Ashlee Simpson greatest hits cds! They must be on the horizon, so get your wallets ready!
