Apple Vs. Beatles
Variety reports: Beatles fan Steve Jobs could lose a large bite of his Apple to his idols.

The Beatles' company, Apple Corps., is involved in a legal battle with Jobs' Apple Computer, claiming the hardware manufacturer is in breach of a 1991 agreement that that forbids it from using the trademark for any application "whose principle content is music." The two companies have been involved in a number of court battles over the years involving the use of the Apple trademark.

Word among the legal community is that an out of court settlement could be imminent and that it will massively dwarf the $26.5 million paid to the Fab Four's company in 1991 in a row over trademark use.

One lawyer told Daily Variety, "People are expecting this to be the biggest settlement anywhere in legal history, outside of a class action suit. The numbers could be mind boggling." [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Ernie Ball RIP
AP reports: Ernie Ball, a pioneer maker of rock 'n' roll guitar strings used by legions of artists from the Rolling Stones to Merle Travis, has died. He was 74.

Ball died at his home Thursday after an ongoing illness, the mortuary handling services announced.

His strings and instruments were used by music stars over the past four decades, from B.B. King to Metallica. Beginning with a small music shop in the San Fernando Valley, Ball built a business with annual sales of $40 million and a worldwide reputation. Along the way, he bucked traditional thinking in the music business.

"He changed the way people thought of guitar accessories, and how they sold and marketed them, and to this day the Ernie Ball way is the industry standard," his son, Sterling Ball, said in a statement. [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

GNR CD in 05, The Sky is Falling
Blabbermouth reports: GUNS N' ROSES bassist Tommy Stinson promises that the group's long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy", will appear before there are democratic elections in the People's Republic.

"It's really close," he tells the Toronto Sun newspaper in today's edition. "There are a few small things to finish up, and some negotiating with the record company. So I'm guessing it'll be released sometime in the New Year, and of course we'll tour the world afterwards."

Stinson says "Chinese Democracy" sounds "a little like the old GUNS, but a lot deeper lyrically. There's more introspective and socially minded stuff, and musically it takes a lot more risks than they ever took. It's going to be amazing." [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Dio's Bizarre Gardening Accident
Blabbermouth reports: The exact details of Ronnie James Dio's gardening accident of 2003 have come to light in an interview with Rockdetector.com editor Garry Sharpe-Young.

Rockdetector.com: Last year, Internet rumours surfaced that you had severed your thumb in a gardening accident. While I'm sure a lot of fans initially brushed this off as unlikely, it then transpired to be true. What actually happened on that day?

Ronnie James Dio: "It was a killer garden gnome. I'm not joking, although I certainly wish I was. What happened was that I was in my yard trying to place this garden gnome on a slope. This is a seriously heavy piece of garden ornament, probably 60lbs or so. Anyway, it fell over, I fell into the shrubbery and then began to slide down to the bottom of the hill. I was trying to stop myself with my feet but put my hand out at the wrong moment. You can understand this all happened in a split second. My hand landed on a rock, and the gnome landed on it, squashing my thumb between the rock and the gnome. Basically it was crushed and took the end of my thumb off. I just looked at my hand and the first thought that flashed into my mind was, 'How on earth am I going to make my devil horn sign now? That's my trademark!' I wasn't worried about the injury, more concerned with my career." [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

New York Daily News reports: [We haven't had a real silly news story in a while, so here you go]PENSACOLA, Fla. - A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs put its paw on the revolver's trigger.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.

Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn't find them a home, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies one in his arms and another in his left hand when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff's report said. [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Megadeth Snatched Iced Earth Bassist
Metal Rules reports: James MacDonough has quit ICED EARTH to become the touring bassist for MEGADETH. He has summarized the switch in the following posting (coutesy of iced-realm.de):

"Hey guys, A while back I had heard that Megadeth might need a bassist so I contacted them via email and much later got a response to my surprise. Before I knew it I was on a conference call with Dave (Mustaine). I sent in some video of me playing a couple Megadeth songs and I got a call a couple days later.

Everything with IE has been up in the air as far as touring so I told Jon (Schaffer) about this when I got the first email back and being my older bro, he told me to go for it. Unfortunately I won't be able to play with IE in the future because this will be a very lengthy tour, but we'll see what happens down the road. I am keeping in touch with Jon and [Glen Drover has been hired on as guitarist - see full story for more of James' statement]- Click Here for the Full Story

Pixies In No Hurry To Record
Xfm reports: After the furore surrounding the internet-only release of their first new material in thirteen years, Bam Thwok', Pixies frontman Frank Black hasn't ruled out the idea of writing more new songs.

Speaking in a new interview, Black has reiterated his claims that while he's in no hurry to record an album of new Pixies material (and his loathing of record companies remains) the idea can't be ruled out.

"I think we're aware of the fact that the material would have to be creme de la crème." he explained to Rolling Stone, "But we're not really in a rush to go there yet for a few different reasons: we're in the middle of doing a tour, we've got to write some good songs, and the record business being what it is right now it's not like we can sell millions and millions of records. Reacter Go Commercial
press release reports: In an age when competition is extraordinarily fierce for young rock bands to bring attention to themselves and achieve desirable promotion, bands are more frequently being forced to look outside the box' for early recognition. The Internet became the initial tool for immediate promotion, and through various networking schemes, new acts were becoming involved with video game soundtracks, radio promotions, and relentless local touring. Television can now be added to the list of promotional possibilities, as Britain's REACTOR are quickly making a name for themselves by supplying the music to a rather memorable television commercial for the new AXE Deodorant Body Spray (www.theaxeeffect.com) which airs nationwide on Spike TV. The music is also featured on the website's news page.

Making waves in a similar method to Andrew WK's origins (who was launched via Expedia.com and Kit Kat commercials) is all part of REACTOR's plan for growth. The band was entered into a painstaking process of elimination that began with nearly 1,000 artists which was whittled down over the course of 8 weeks. REACTOR was eventually chosen for their originality and dramatic flair to be the spokes-band' for Axe's debut multi-million dollar worldwide advertising campaign. - Click Here for the Full Story
