The decision to scrap Lollapalooza was made Monday evening (June 21), when organizers and promoters realized they stood to lose several million dollars. In all markets except New York, advance ticket sales were below estimates. [see full story for more] - Click Here for the Full Story

Phish Rap With Jay-Z
MTV reports: Following a year in which
numerous DJs mixed Jay-Z's vocals with the music of the Beatles, Metallica,
Weezer and others, the Brooklyn, New York, rapper tipped his hat back to
rock fans by performing at two unlikely concerts over the weekend.
The stranger of the two was Friday night during a set by the jam band Phish in Coney Island in Brooklyn, at the group's supposedly final New York-area show. After the veteran rockers played "Wilson," the second song of their second set, Jay hopped onstage and the group backed him on "99 Problems" and "Big Pimpin'." Pocket CDs Coming
Reuters reports: Some of the world's largest
record companies are testing a new music format in Europe known as the
pocket CD to spin new life into faltering music singles.
At three inches in diameter -- or roughly half the size of a conventional compact disc -- the pocket CD carries a selection of music tracks and mobile phone ring tones from a host of artists ranging from 50 Cent to Black Eyed Peas.
The technology made its debut in Germany last summer with Universal Music, Sony Music and later EMI and BMG, all selling a limited number of the CDs to test the public's appetite. [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

chief executive of Vivendi Universal, was taken into police custody Monday
in an investigation into financial wrongdoing during his time at the media
and telecommunications giant, police said.
...French investigating magistrates are probing a massive share buyback in which Vivendi allegedly spent over $1.2 billion to prop up its own share price in the weeks following the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Messier and his top team are suspected of buying back Vivendi shares well above the authorized volumes even while the company was presenting its financial results a practice strictly forbidden by stock market rules. [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story
Bon Jovi Fire Sale
AP reports: Years ago, Alec John Such
provided the backbeat for one of the biggest bands in the world as the
bassist for Bon Jovi. But it's been 10 years since he left the group, and
he wants to move to a smaller place.
So he decided to auction off a bunch of old memorabilia Sunday, the third such sale he's held in recent years. This time, though, there were not so many buyers.
A few Fender bass guitars sold for $700 to $750, and a 1960 MGA Roadster convertible went for $7,500. All told, the auction netted about $30,000 from 300 items.
Last year, a similar auction sold 1,200 items and made a $300,000 profit, and a 2000 auction took in $400,000. [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story
Bowie Popped In The Eye With
Lollipop
Xfm reports: The gig on Saturday (19 June)

a bright yellow cagoule onstage. 20 minutes into the gig, a member of the
audience threw a lollipop at the singer, which (according to The Sun) hit
him directly in the eye. Bowie then "winced in agony as the stick shot
between his left eyeball and its lid" halting the gig, before a roadie
removed the offending piece of confectionary. - Click

Daniel Johnston All Star
Tribute
reports: Daniel Johnston, one of the first,
great lo-fi artists of independent music, will be the subject of an upcoming
tribute album. Set to be released on September 21st via Gammon Records,
The Late, Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered will be fashioned from
two CDs; the first is a collection of 18 Johnston songs covered by various
luminaries of the indie rock scene, and the second, Johnston's original
versions-- making the result a weird sort of greatest hits album. According
to a recent press release, Johnston has been unable to make a living from
his music, and as a result, the tribute was planned as a fundraising venture.
The man has many fans, as evidenced by the bands that said yes: Beck, Death
