When Avril Attacks
NMC reports: [A bit o' silly news to start
this Thursday] In Blender magazine's September issue, Avril Lavigne describes
a bad experience she once had in a record store.
The "Don't Tell Me" singer says that people are usually nice to her when she meets them on the street. But Lavigne recalls one time when a guy was talking trash about her in a record store. The 19-year-old ignored him and sensibly left the store. But, says Lavigne, "He came outside and started again, so I grabbed him and was like, 'What'd ya say?' Then he mouthed off at me again, so I kneed him really hard in the b---s. Then I threw him -- he went flying. His little punk girlfriend comes up, like, 'What...are you doing?' I'm like, 'What...are you doing?' They both ran off." - Click Here for the Full Story

silly news stories for one day] Tom Delonge has a confession to make. The
Blink-182 guitarist recently admitted to MTV that he has a thing for bookstores.
Says Delonge, "What I like more than anything is, uh... going to bookstores and reading books about politics." He jokes, "It's a weird thing I'm into. I like to learn. Is that weird? I'm in a rock band."- Click Here for the Full Story

Page Rules Out Zep Reunion
Blabbermouth reports: Former LED ZEPPELIN
guitarist Jimmy Page has ruled out the possibility of a ZEPPELIN reunion
in the future.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Page said that if something was going to happen, it would have happened after the band's "Led Zeppelin" live DVD was released last year. "It is far too nebulas a situation" he said. "It is far too cloudy. When I worked on the DVD I really thought if there was going to be any overtures made by the band it may well been after that point after we visited the first nights of the premieres but there wasn't anything forthcoming". Gene Simmons has posted the following message on his official web site:
"Talked today about a possible (..gulp) 'Queer Eye For The Straight Guy' appearance. They called and asked me if I would do it. I'm a fan of the show. We may shoot on the 28th of Sept. And, while the PR people at most places prefer not to 'leak' any info until they're ready, I don't play like that. As soon as I make up my mind about something, I will let you all know. MTV Bans Beenie Man
Mercury News reports: Dancehall star Beenie
Man, who has recorded anti-gay songs in the past, was yanked from a concert
associated with the MTV Video Music Awards this weekend after gay groups
planned a protest, the network said Wednesday.
MTV pulled the Jamaican singer from the roster Tuesday after South Florida gay activists announced plans to protest Saturday's concert in Miami over some of his past lyrics, including "I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays" and "Queers must be killed."
"We don't want anything to overshadow what will be a great weekend of music events for South Floridians," MTV spokeswoman Marnie Black said Wednesday. She declined further comment. [see full story for more] - Click Here for the Full Story

Shortlist
Xfm reports: Franz Ferdinand, Belle &
Sebastian, Keane and Muse are amongst the artists nominated for the 2004
Shortlist Music Prize.
The Shortlist is often compared to a stateside version of the Mercury Music Prize, aiming to champion more adventurous and alternative music than is usual at US music awards, by only honouring albums that have sold fewer than 500,000 copies (gold).
Massive Attack's 3D, Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age, Norah Jones, Perry Farrell, Robert Smith and director Jim Jarmusch are amongst the panel of 20 Listmakers' who have been assembled to choose a 'Long List' of 73 nominations which will be whittled down to a 'Shortlist' of ten finalists to be announced in mid-September [see the full story for the "long list" of artists up for the shortlist prize] - Click Here for the Full Story

Mute Anthology
Pitchfork reports: Mute Records may have
the thinnest indie pop roster this side of Merzbow's personal record collection,
which means that whatever you say about their upcoming two-disc history
class, Indiepop 1, due October 4th, you can't call it incestuous. Mute
carved out a niche for themselves in the 80s on the grown-up side of industrial
music, playing host to Fad Gadget, Cabaret Voltaire and the reunited Wire.
Though they've since branched out further, twee they ain't. The compilation
is a joint release with Rough Trade Shops (which is not the same thing
as Rough Trade Records)-- in fact, the compilation conspicuously skips
as many seminal Rough Trade artists as it includes. (Among the missing:
The Go-Betweens, Young Marble Giants, and, if they count, The Smiths.)

Trail of Dead Bumped by U2,
Eminem
Pitchfork reports: There are benefits
to being on a major label like Interscope-- big recording budget, nice
tour buses, money to buy food, plenty o' chicks (or dudes, if that's your
thing)... but there's also a downside. Say you (and by you, we mean ...And
You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead) have completely finished your long-awaited
and much-anticipated fourth album. Now let's say that said album was scheduled
to be released at roughly the same time as albums by U2, No Doubt and Eminem.
You might argue (and rightly so) that people who are planning on buying
those albums aren't necessarily the same people who might be in the market
for a Trail of Dead record. But here's the thing: Interscope appears to
be goddamn hoping they will be. And so it is that Trail of Dead's new album,
according to a post by co-frontman Jason Reece on highly trustable fansite
Trailofdead.org, will be pushed back to January to accommodate the fans
of egomaniacal hip-hop stars and over-the-hill arena rock bands.
The record, entitled Worlds Apart, has been finished since July, and was originally scheduled to be released October 5th, but no firm date is now planned. [see full story for lots more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Slayer Reigning DVD &
Fall Tour
Slayer isn't letting up after blowing
away audiences at this summer's Ozzfest. What follows is some highlights
from press release issued Wednesday.
SLAYER is putting the finishing touches on "Still Reigning," the band's brand new DVD set for release in late October (American Recordings/UME).
The DVD will open with the band's 1986, 28-minute benchmark album "Reign In Blood" performed live in its entirety by Slayer's original line-up - Tom Araya (vocals, bass), guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, and drummer Dave Lombardo, who permanently rejoined the band in 2003. During the last 45-seconds of the album's final song "Raining Blood," blood fell from the "heavens," completely drenching the band, their instruments, and the stage. Hanneman unintentionally avoided the bloodbath as he stepped offstage for just a moment to handle a problem with his guitar, and missed the cue.
"Still Reigning" will also offer bonus material including live performances of Slayer classics such as "War Ensemble," "Hallowed Point," "Necrophobic," "Mandatory Suicide," "Spill The Blood," "Hell Awaits," and "South of Heaven," as well as exclusive interviews and backstage footage.
The DVD, which runs approximately 70-minutes and will retail for $14.98, was directed by Dean Karr (Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson) and shot this past July at the Civic Center in Augusta, ME.
Slayer will then headline this Fall's Jagermeister Music Tour kicking off October 29 in Springfield, MO. Killswitch Engage and Mastodon will anchor the bill. Confirmed dates, cities and venues will be announced after Labor Day.
