What
Are They Up To Now: From Van Halen To Community Theatre
Paul Cashmere Undercover
news reports: So where is Gary Cherone these days? Former Van Halen and
Extreme singer Cherone will spend the next few months starring in a small
community musical version of Pink Floyd's The Wall in Wisconsin.
Cherone left Van Halen after the disastrous Van Halen III album from 1998. He was the third singer for VH following in the footsteps of David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. He was previously lead singer for Extreme. 'More Than Words' was a #2 hit in 1991.
He will play Pink, the starring role Bob Geldof played in the movie. The show will premiere at The Schauer Arts and Activities Center in Hartford, WI on November 29 and then play the Scottish Rite in Milwaukee from January 22 - February 1, 2004.
Cherone's theatrical yearnings commenced after leaving Van Halen. He hooked by with the Boston Rock Opera company and has played Judas in their 2000 production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
He recently said that after the release of III and the critical panning the writing was on the wall for Van Halen. "We were on tour and we brought the old catalog and the majority of the fans did appreciate it but in the end they wanted their Dave [Lee Roth]. That is what it was" he told Classic Rock Revisited.- Click Here for the Full Story

Lost
Sabbath Song Unearthed
Blabbermouth reports:
According to this month's edition of Record Collector magazine, a two-track
BLACK SABBATH acetate 45 rpm record was recently discovered. On the A side
is a song called "When I Come Down", which is believed to have been recorded
at various Birmingham, England studios between March and October 1969.
The song, which is described as short but boasting strong vocals and harmonica
playing, begins with a bluesy, pentatonic riff and although the guitar
gets rather lost in the mix, the overall feel approximates to a slower
take on "Evil Woman", while much of the rhythm is like "NIB", set up in
half time to the riff. The track was written by LOCOMOTIVE keyboardist
Norman Haines, although no keyboards appear on the track. On the B-side
is a rough demo of "The Wizard". It is not presently clear if this track
will ever show up on any kind of official release.-

They only have two original albums out and already have a remix and now a live album? Gotta cash in while you can but KISS at least waited until they had 3 studio albums under their belt before going with a live album. And when it comes to the live experience, Linkin Park is no KISS!

Jet
Deny Iggy Theft
AP reports: If you've
heard the Jet song "Are You Gonna Be My Girl," it may remind you of Iggy
Pop's "Lust For Life." However, the band swears it's not ripping off Pop.
Bassist Mark Wilson told AP radio they just picked up a Motown beat. It's the same beat Phil Collins used for his version of "Can't Hurry Love" but no one complains about that singer-guitarist Nic Cester added.
"I still have the best job in the world, whether you think I ripped someone off or not," drummer Chris Cester said. "It's just a simple dance song about not getting the girl that you want because she's hanging out with some other nob."
It may be a simple song, but Jet is still trying to keep it organic. Nic Cester said they purposely left a cough on at the beginning just to show they're not session musicians but real guys.
"We're just four guys in a room playing songs," he said.
Their album "Get Born" will be in stores Oct. 7.
Yeah, but if Bowie's doing Lou, and Lou's Doing Bowie, Lou's still doing Lou.
Dave
Matthews Rocks NYC
Launch reports:
The Dave Matthews Band delivered the concert of their careers in front
of more than 100,000 fans in New York City's Central Park Wednesday (September
24). The show, dubbed AOL's Concert For The Schools, raised more than $2
million on behalf of New York City's education system. After the first
song, lead singer Dave Matthews told the audience, "So nice to run into
you in the park here, the greatest park in the world, and the greatest
city in world."
The Dave Matthews Band delighted the crowd with 20 songs during their three-hour set. They were joined mid-set by guitarist Warren Hayes of Gov't Mule, who proceeded to jam out with the DMB on such songs as "Cortez The Killer" and "Jimi Thing."
New York City Mayor
Mike Bloomberg said the members of the Dave Matthews Band are not just
great musicians, but great citizens as well, because they donated their
time to help the city's schools. "The Dave Matthews Band, they care," Bloomberg
said. "They're great musicians but they are, not corporate citizens, they're
individual citizens. They know what society really needs and rather than
just talk about it, they actually go out and do something."

Lennon
For Sale
AP reports: Stamps
designed by John Lennon to support a strike by postal workers sold for
$2,000, double the pre-sale estimate, auctioneers at Sotheby's said.
The stamps, which depict a clenched fist, were part of a sale of rock 'n' roll and film memorabilia auctioned Wednesday at London's Olympia exhibition hall. The buyer and seller weren't identified.
A 1960s table from
Lennon's former home at Weybridge, south of London, went for $3,800, and
a signed copy of "Revolver," one of the band's most celebrated albums,
sold for $34,000. But a collection of photographs of the Beatles in Adelaide,
Australia, which had been expected to fetch $24,000, failed to sell.

Story
In related Lennon news, Chart Attack reports: John Lennon fans will soon have another valuable item to add to their memorabilia collections. The Lennon Legend DVD, featuring unseen footage and other exciting snippets, will be released in Canada on November 4.
Modern-day technology has allowed original video footage to be restored and music to be remastered in 5.1 surround sound.
Some of these hidden gems include "Everybody Had A Hard Year" (an excerpt from John and Yoko's Film #6 which features a never-before-seen December 1968 performance by the couple) and a live performance of "Imagine" filmed at the Salute To Lew Grade concert in 1975, Lennon's last-ever live performance.
Other highlights include the new videos for "Working Class Hero" (filmed at Lennon's childhood home and school in Liverpool), "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)" (filmed April 20, 1980, a relaxed day at John and Yoko's mansion in Coldspring Harbour, Long Island) and "Give Peace A Chance" (featuring the "Bed-In" footage from May 1969). Fans can also look forward to protest footage and the December 14, 1980 vigils in Liverpool, London and New York which had tens of thousands of protesters singing "Give Peace A Chance." - Full Story
Soulfly
Sokay
The PRP reports:
Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera has commented on the recent line-up change
of the band which saw Mike Doling, Roy Mayorga and Marcello D. Rapp all
leave the fold. Here's what he had to say:
"This is no big deal, Soulfly is always evolving. I am always going to introduce new musicians to the fans. In fact there has never been the same band on any consecutive Soulfly record. I never intended Soulfly to be a traditional band.".-Full Story and Lineup details
Babs
Comes Clean
Not even remotely
rock related but it's nice to hear that Babs agrees with a lot of people,
for a change.
AP reports: Barbra Streisand says one reason she gave up performing in public is that listening to her own songs is boring.
"I never listen to my records for maybe 10 years. Then I can appreciate it, but really, I just get sick of it. That's why I gave up concerts in addition to having stage fright and the exertion of singing 30 songs a night," the 61-year-old singer tells Reader's Digest in its October issue. Excerpts of the interview were released in advance.
"It's boring to sing your own songs," she said. "I remember going into Tahoe once, and I sang all new material because I was so bored with mine. The reviews, `How dare she not sing "People"?'" .-Full Story and Lineup details
Was that the real reason she gave up live shows? Wasn't there a rumor that she had bankrupted too many transsexuals with her $1000 tickets? finally wasn't she going to move out of the country in January 2001?
Letter
of the week
In reference to the "Punkers Tell Us How
To Vote" story we ran in Wednesday's Day In Rock report:
Unsigned wrote,
I don't see any difference between what
Fat Mike is doing by telling us to dump Bush than what you are doing telling
us not to listen to him. Your a hypocrit. unsigned
Answer-
Sorry you feel that way. But the point
I made then and I will make again is this; don't turn to celebrities to
decide on important issues and how you are going to vote. It's far better
to research the issues and make your own decisions based on that. If you
feel that my telling you to think for yourself instead of listening to
some punk star telling you what you should think is hypocritical, then
I think you missed the point entirely. Maybe you should go ask Fat Mike
to explain to you what I meant. Keavin
