School
of Rock
AP reports: There's
more than one way to teach kids the beat. On a recent school day, Liberty
DeVitto, the longtime drummer for Billy Joel, asked third-graders at P.S.
176 to flip over their guitars and tap out rhythms on the wooden backs.
In seconds, the kids were banging away and singing lyrics of their own.
Grins lit up the classroom as teacher David Wish picked a fancy accompanying
tune on his guitar.
As fans flock to "School of Rock," the hit movie about a rock 'n' roller masquerading as a teacher, Wish and friends are doing it in real life.
The year-old program
called Little Kids Rock reaches about 2,000 children in 130 public schools
in New York, San Francisco, Memphis, Tenn., and Newark, N.J. The goal is
to fill a void where music education has been cut, while building a curriculum
based on improvisation and participation.

Won't Rock
Reuters reports:
The Rolling Stones have again failed in their decades-long quest to bring
their rock 'n' roll circus to China, announcing on Monday that efforts
to arrange two shows there next month had proved "far more complicated
and difficult than expected."
The veteran British rockers were originally scheduled to play Beijing and Shanghai in April, but were forced to cancel them -- as well as two shows in Hong Kong -- because of the SARS crisis that was sweeping through the region.
"The band looks forward to playing concerts in these cities in the future," read a statement issued by their New York publicist, who was unavailable for further comment. -Click Here for the Full Story

Give Up CDs
Muchmusic reports:
Radiohead has been known for reinventing their sound on every album; now
they are reinventing the way they'll put out music. Fresh out of their
contract with Parlophone, Thom Yorke says Radiohead is tired of "album,
album, album." With the freedom to do whatever they want, the band has
decided to release EPs with fewer songs for a change. Yorke feels the music
business will be forced to change because the way people are listening
to music is changing.. Click

More on the strange
Varg Vikernes saga from Blabbermouth here is an excerpt of their report:
Varg Vikernes threatened a family with a pistol and hijacked their car
in a failed bid to elude the Norwegian police during his 24 hours on the
run, it was reported Monday.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday (October 26), a family of three driving through the valley known as Numedal in Buskerud County reported being flagged down by a pedestrian. When they stopped to assist him, the pedestrian believed to be Vikernes allegedly threatened them with a handgun and forced them to surrender their car.
"They explained that they were held at gunpoint and were forced to leave the vehicle, and that the man [Vikernes] took off in it," police spokesperson Knut Svalheim told wire service NTB.
The car was ultimately spotted around midnight Sunday by an unmarked police patrol in Romerike, north of Oslo. Believing Vikernes to be armed, police responded with five police cars and armed officers.
"We signaled for him to pull over, but when he failed to respond, we had to press his car in between two police cars," police operations leader Vidar Hjulstad said.
Although no gun was found, a knife or a bayonet was reportedly retrieved from the vehicle. However, at this time, it is not clear if the knife belonged to Vikernes or the family who owns the car..- Click Here for the Full Story

Bambi Or Die
In the "wow you
should have told us last week" department, this press release went out
today.
Goldfinger front man and animal rights activist John Feldmann and his wife Amy, were featured on the syndicated television show, Celebrity Justice, last week.
The segment dealt with an incident that occurred on October 3rd, when the couple's Los Angeles area home was raided by over 30 law enforcement officials after they were falsely suspected of taking part in an act of vandalism against the home of Jerry Greenwalt, the General Manager for the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services. The Feldmann's home was searched for over three hours.
Greenwalt has been targeted by animal activists in the past several months.
According to news media, Greenwalt's home and car were vandalized and the letters "ALF" were allegedly scrawled on the property, which is usually associated with the Animal Liberation Front, an anonymous underground organization that liberates animals and engages in economic sabotage against animal abusers. Traditionally, these actions are "claimed" by the ALF by contacting animal rights groups, but so far no one has claimed responsibility.
The Feldmann's have admitted to taking part in a non-violent protest outside of Greenwalt's home and they believe that they were mistakenly singled out after a witness wrote down Amy's license plate number as she was peacefully passing out animal rights literature and flyers in the neighborhood, preparing people for the event.
On the day of the incident, a spokesperson for the couple issued the following statement: "The Feldmann's have no idea why they have been targeted, but they maintain their compassion for all living beings. This unfortunate event only emphasizes the fact that law enforcement continues to support the abusers, while terrorizing those with compassion for all life. We will not stand by and let this continue to occur."
They conclude with
the real reason for the press release: "Goldfinger is currently on tour
with Good Charlotte."
