Day in Pop Report for 05/26/2015
It was all supposed to be a secret but last week (May 21) in honor of Red Nose Day, the band gave us a taste at the secret musical. The 12-minute clip, narrated by Liam Neeson, gives us a taste of the 16 songs they've come up with for the show, which includes a rather catchy song about incest, a jaunty tune about the Red Wedding and the Khaleesi singing reggae. Though, Emilia Clarke, the actress who plays Daenerys, doesn't seem to think this musical is a good idea, comparing it to the Titanic--not the successful movie, but the unsuccessful boat." Even still, they invite the entire cast of the HBO show to check it out, and though only two show up at first, others like Jon Snow and Theon Greyjoy do end up showing up. We're pretty impressed by Peter Dinklage's (a.k.a. Tyrion Lannister) performance of the new hit soul track, "A Man For All Seasons (Still Going Strong)." Read more and check it out here.
"OFFICIAL ALBUM RELASE IN STORES AND ONLINE @ MIDNIGHT TONIGHT , THANX FOR LISTENING , HOPE YALH ENJOYED . BLESS . A$VP X LIFE X RIP YAMS," he wrote. While the album is officially on iTunes and Spotify now, hard copies of the record will hit stores Tuesday, May 26. The album features 18-tracks and guest spots from Kanye West, Schoolboy Q, Miguel, M.I.A., Lil Wayne, Juicy J, Rod Stewart, Mos Def and his fallen crewmate A$AP Yams, who died of an accidental drug overdose earlier this year. It also features the track "Better Things," which takes aim at Rita Ora. Stream the album here.
Starting with a piano, Lambert sings, "Baby, your love is a crime/Danger by day, but you're evil by the night" before the song sounds like it's taking a page from Daft Punk's "Get Lucky." Meaning, people are sure to be getting lucky on the dance floor to this track soon enough. Keeping with the night theme, Lambert also dropped "Another Lonely Night," which is a more subdued track that has him singing over a bevy of snaps about a man leaving him all alone. "I'd do anything to have you by my side," he sweetly sings. If that wasn't enough, Lambert also posted a short trailer for his new album--his first since 2012's Trespassing--due in stores on June 16, which shows off his impeccable dance moves and style. Check it out here.
The two teamed up for a special duet of the Muppet classic "Rainbow Connection" in honor of Red Nose Day, a day dedicated to raising money for children living poverty both her in the U.S. and other parts of the world. It was the first time it was ever celebrated in America. With a clearing of his throat, Kermit started in on the track from The Muppet Movie while Sheeran played his acoustic guitar. Sheeran even had trouble keeping it together, but could you blame him? Kermit's just so adorable. Sheeran joked that Kermit wouldn't be able to go back to the swamp "unless he brings back the bacon." "Some green, so to speak," Kermit joked, as not to be confused with his sometimes lady love Miss Piggy. Watch it here.
In it the relationship between a boy and his dog is explored, followed as both grow up. The boy goes off to war as his best friend the dog waits patiently for his return until he can wait no more and so runs away to find him. It's as dangerous as it sounds, even in animated form, and it's likely you'll tear up around the 2:50 mark. "Waiting for Love" is one of the newest songs from Avicii's upcoming Stories, which should be released in 2015 but does not yet have an official release date. Watch the video here.
The duo, Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, had this to say about the song "So for us, the song is all about people who set out with the best intentions but end up with the short end of the stick. "The wonderful BullySongs from the UK wrote the topline explained to us that this song is all about those times that say to your lady or moms, 'I am just running to the store, Ill be back in an hour, and end up back at 5am...' and that idea really resonated with us as trouble makers with hearts of gold... "So this song is dedicated to all the screw ups, all the ppl out their who set out meaning well but somehow always end up messing it all up. Whether you're doing something illegal to make ends meet or botching a trust fall... But it's an idea that hits close to home for everyone at some point..." First, there was a face mask, which looks like the kind you can pick up at Sephora or the drug store for under $10. Gaga revealed in a caption that she'd been working on her beauty for eight hours the previous day and that her team was only just now getting to the beach for her hair transformation. She followed that with a close-up of her lip mask and a detailed description of her plumping regime. Then Gaga got into the nitty gritty of her blonde, which was done by hairstylist Patti Song. She wrote that she was going for a "clean solid classic blonde" color and so was applying virgin bleach and not balayage. "That means "to sweep" in French, I prefer not to use this kind because it will create a more highlighted look which I don't want," Gaga wrote. Several rounds of bleach, coconut oil and toner later, Gaga is a blonde again. "Although it was painful at times on the scalp, I like to avoid using any barriers with bleach so it's as reflective and translucent as possible while still healthy," she wrote. "Advil and pound a few Pinot, but rinse immediately if the scalp is burning too much not worth it to get blistersMy hair still feels very soft!" Check it out here.
Such is the case with "Dr. Pepper," an unexpected collaboration between all four artists, premiered last week (May 22) via The Fader. Prepped for K-Pop star CL's debut English language album, the song is straight swagger with an irresistibly bubbling beat. "Put it on ice, b--, Dr. Pepper," CL snarls, fresh out the gates. "Chillin' in the freezer when I'm under pressure." There's only a handful of words in the chorus and that's all that's necessary. The track not surprisingly comes from a place of aggression. CL recorded it after Diplo blew off one of their recording sessions. 'Diplo canceled a session on me, and I was so mad at him. I was drinking a can of Dr. Pepper and wrote the song so I could go home as soon as possible," CL told The FADER, who premiered the track. 'Diplo ended up loving it!" Check it out here.
Netflix has released a 24-second teaser for A Very Murray Christmas that shows a rather pouty faced Murray, wearing a pair of reindeer antlers--so he's clearly not a total scrooge--staring out the window to a little light jazz. While the clip doesn't give anything away, it does reveal that the special will hit Netflix in December. No exact date has been given as of yet. It was previously reported that Murray's Christmas special would have the actor playing a version of himself who's trying to put on a TV show that unfortunately gets interrupted by a snow storm. Hilarity ensues, we assume as he tries to figure out how the show will go on. Tie undone, looking a little sad in this clip, we're assuming he's going to need some cheering up from some of his famous friends before Christmas arrives. Watch the trailer here.
My brain, when in the midst of crushing on someone, is of a dual nature. There's the omg-I-like-this-person-so-much-everything-is-sparkly part, and then there's the omg-why-am-I-doing-this-I-hate-myself part. The first part is fun. But that second part - the self-analyzing, self-loathing part- has always been so interesting to me. Why do I beat myself up when I have feelings for someone? So I wrote a song about it. I realized that the beating-myself-up thing comes from feeling like a complete and utter clich. Girls get labeled "boy crazy" way more often than guys get labeled "girl crazy", I think, like the only thing that consumes our head is luuuvvv. But here's the thing: when I like someone, they really do consume my thoughts. I can barely keep a straight face when I hear someone say their name. I "keep turning corners" with the tiny hope that they will- for whatever mystical reason- be "standing there waiting for me". (Yes, I am quoting myself, I promise I don't do that in daily life.) (OR DO I??) (I don't.) (Have I lost you yet? Parentheses!!) I search for hidden messages in the books I read and the movies I watch like they contain some prophetic sign that we will one day be together. After three years of playing "Clich", I finally get that that whole mentality is actually just human. It doesn't take anything away from you as a person. It just means you're feeling extra extra sparkly, and what's the harm in that? Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you watch the video here and learn more about Justine right here!
