Day in Pop Report for 02/27/2015
The apology to Beck was for obvious reasons. West famously rushed the stage at this year's Grammy awards ceremony after Beck won the Album of the Year prize. But instead of going on a rant, he simply returned to his seat without saying a word. It was later learned that he was going to protest the award not going to Beyonce for her self-titled surprise album. West tweeted, "I would like to publicly apologize to Beck, I'm sorry Beck.- KANYE WEST (@kanyewest) February 26, 2015" The apology to Bruno Mars was more curious. Read more here.
Thankfully, this story has turned out to be a weird publicity stunt by someone presumably involved with the show. Maybe the first tip-off should have been the bizarre request laid out in the press release: "In honor of Mr. McGrath's legacy, his team is asking in lieu of flowers, fans post a Sugar Ray Selfie, holding a packet of sugar over their heart. #RIPMARKMCGRATH" USA Today has done some tracking on the events, discovering that TBS was in the dark on the events, and the publicity company responsible for the email, We Are Prismatics, isn't affiliated with the show. Bieber appeared on a new show called #RepeatAfterMe, in which people are given secret instructions about what to say over an earpiece. In the episode he heads to a bowling alley and gets a private lesson from a woman named Tish, all the while receiving instructions from the show's host, Wendi McLendon-Covey. These instructions include giving Tish a hug, referring to himself in the third person as 'The Biebs" and, climactically, twerking for her. When Justin is told to roll the ball, he drops it directly into the lane. Together, he and Tish watch it slowly roll down into the gutter. At the end, he's forced to reveal himself (no, not in that way), but Tish takes it all in stride. Watch it here.
As rumors started mounting about the reason behind her fall and her reaction afterward, the pop icon took to Instagram to address the incident."Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight!," she wrote. Revealing that it was indeed a wardrobe malfunction that tripped her up on stage, she continued "But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I'm fine!" See her posts here.
"I decided to go buy stuff for my house because I just moved," Zedd recalled, "so I have an empty house, and I had to pee. I had my engineer with me, so I was like, 'I hope they have a bathroom.' He was like, 'Just go to the studio over there,' which was across the street from my studio. "So I walk in, and John, the head of our label, who had just signed Selena, was there' He was like, 'Have you ever met Selena?' That was literally the next thing he said' So he introduced me to her, and was like, 'Hey, she's cool, maybe we should make a song together.' And then like a week later, we start working on a song. All because I had to pee." Check out the full interview here.
This year, though, will mark the return of Donald Glover, Gambino's real name/acting name. Horror movie The Lazarus Effect is out today (Feb. 27), while an even more anticipated role, in Magic Mike XXL, is currently being edited. Glover, in an interview with Collider, confirmed that he will be stripping in the movie. "I definitely show myself a little bit," Glover said. "It's a funny thing. I just never really - that energy is, I don't know, getting into it is cool, to just dive into something like that. I've never been in that world. It's very few people who have ever been a convention center filled with 900 women screaming. That's a feeling that I feel like very few people know. It was crazy. I met so many people. There was a girl there, I was having a scene with her, just talking, and everybody was just so interesting, but supportive. It's hard to be that supportive when you're in that room for that long, screaming." Read more here.
Ferg jettisons his title of Trap Lord for that of Dope Lord in this iPhone video shot at New York Fashion Week. Watch closely for cameos from Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Kanye West, Diddy, two of the HAIMs and Moschino designer Jeremy Scott. And, of course, the ever-present Delevingne in the corner doing her own version of Blue Steel. The collaboration comes after the duo's own mini model walk-off last year. That's after they challenged each other to the duel over Twitter, then posting via Instagram. And it was great. Really, really great. Watch the video here.
In an interview with MTV, the rapper took a few lighthearted shots at the new series. 'It's like Glee," he said of Empires. "It's like Glee with a little hip-hop music in it." 50's criticisms extended to the speed at which the series moves through its plot so far. 'I was like, 'Damn. What happened? What happened to the rest of the story?'" He said regarding the sudden introduction of the main character Cookie. "I don't know what's going on. It started moving real fast." Read more here.
While on the road with her tour guest Cashmere Cat, a producer of the moment who's worked with everyone from Kanye West to Usher, Juicy J, DJ Mustard, Tinashe and Ludacris (and Grande herself on My Everything cut "Be My Baby") the pair premiered a never-before-heard track together. The song, the title of which hasn't yet been announced, is a sweet synth-laden mid-tempo jam with Grande flexing her vocal range. It could be the song that Grande hinted the pair were working on last month when she tweeted, "cutting a song for my friiiiend / honeymoon tour guest @cashmerecat's albumm today." Or the pair could have more material in the works. Read more and watch video of the song performance here.
In a release, Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye discussed their whirlwind path to Nashville and country stardom, gaining a No. 1 hit on Billboard's Country Airplay chart even before an album was announced. Dann Huff, Academy of Country Music producer of the year in 2006 and 2009, will produce the album.'We couldn't have guessed it would be like this," Dye said of the response. 'Maddie and I were two girls with a big dream and a lot of determination. We wrote a song out of something a lot of people were talking about, and suddenly, people were talking about us. That's when things got crazy'." Read more here.
Also involved in the project is Cigar City in Tampa, a partner of Rock Brothers, explained Nebraska Brewing co-owner Paul Kavulak to Radio.com this afternoon. "On a road trip recently, our lead brewers from Cigar City and Nebraska Brewing Co. got on the phone, hallucinated a pretty cool recipe to start with," Kavulak said, adding that they'll like use some ingredients that "don't traditionally find themselves in amber ales.' "The brainpower that we put together, we're going to make sure the public love it, 311 fans love it, but at the same time, we're brewers so we want to give it a little something special," he said. This song has an interesting story, I started with the idea of the song and the title because I am a big fan of "El Piporro" a Mexican folk ranchero singer that asked "Where do the dead go?" as part of an interlude in a performance I saw. So that gave me the idea to start a song with that question. Then Gil (lead vocal) came to the studio, and he looked at the title of the song and liked it a lot because he had just come back from a funeral, and it was a mere coincidence to find this title on a demo, he got inspired to write about the subject.. Then Gil wrote all the lyrics that talked about everlasting love even after you're dead and always living life to its fullest. This became one of our most well known songs. For the Unplugged album we approached this song wit an even more emotional intention. We invited Carla Morrison to add her melancholic sweet voice to record with us to take the song to another level and then it became the first single off of the MTV Unplugged album we just released. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you watch the video here and learn more about the band and the new MTV Unplugged Releases right here!
