Day in Pop Report for 05/05/2014
The track, written by Jackson and Paul Anka, is one of eight discovered and polished by L.A. Reid for the forthcoming Xscape album. The duet version with JT was also released. This treatment is part of the deluxe release of Xscape, out May 13, where the tracks are modernized by current producers and artists. This track fell under Timbaland's care, but producers working on giving this treatment to other Jackson songs include Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, John McClain and Jerome "Jroc" Harmon and L.A. Reid. When Matthew McConaughey and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees asked Chesney to play their benefit at New Orleans' House of Blues on May 17, Chesney couldn't say no. "Having spent the last five or six months in the studio, I am so ready to get out there and play," Chesney told The Tennessean. "Even though we're making music, it's not the same and I can't wait to be in a room with the energy of the peoplehave that feeding back at me, getting all that coming back at me." The concert will feature Chesney for a one-hour acoustic set. more on this story
Iggy opens the track with a shout to Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Gun Club's frontman who died in 1996 from a brain hemorrhage. The track is from the third installment of the Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project, titled Axels and Sockets that will be released on May 3. It will also include tracks by Debbie Harry, Mark Lanegan, Lydia Lunch, Warren Ellis, Mick Harvey, Kid Congo Powers and Primal Scream. In a statement on the Glitterhouse Records website, a description says, "the Project again strives to pay homage by avoiding the clichs of the conventional tribute record, creating fierce, iconoclastic new music out of song sketches, demo recordings, scribbled lyrics and leftover riffs Jeffrey tragically didn't live to complete, while some put their own spin on personal favourites from his esteemed catalogue." For those not in the know, Moscato is a perfectly legal substance to do pretty much anything you'd like to on, except drive or operate heavy machinery. Muscat is the variety of grape used to make wine, but also raisins and grapes. You've probably got some muscat grapes in your house right now. Detail and Future go in-depth with their descriptions of pouring it on your nipple, so we can safely assume they mean wine. Moscato is typically a sweet wine, and when it's spelled with an "o" and not a "u", it originates from Australia, California or South Africa. When these two guys employ it, it is for your pleasure. When Ferreira sat down with Radio.com last month, she admitted that this constant need for people to figure her out-"Is she like the pretty dumb girl or is she just off the wall crazy?" she mock questioned-is starting to get under her skin. "I feel like now with like all these blogs and stuff, I feel like every single thing someone does, especially girls in pop music for some reason, is constantly analyzedit's just like, it's not that complex," she told Radio.com. "Not everything a girl does in pop music is a think piece." All this unwanted attention has also got her sympathizing with one of her favorite singers, Fiona Apple, who earned herself a rather dubious reputation thanks in no small part to her "the word is bulls-t" speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1997. "They wanted to say she was sullen and like moody and crazy," Ferreira said. "She was frustrated with everything and was kind of just like, 'Ugh, alright I'm done' and went away for a second." "That's the thing that's cool about her," Ferreira, who says Apple's 1996 debut, Tidal, was the first record she ever bought, added. "She'll release an album and be like, 'Alright, here it is' and then go away. But the album is always good. I really admire her as a person and I think that's always why I related to her music in a lot of ways." more on this story
"I probably would have never made it through college without baseball, so I'm thankful for that," he said during an exclusive interview with Radio.com. "I really am proud that I got to play on that level. It was an incredible experience. My senior year at Western Michigan, I hit .300. But there's probably a hundred right-fielders in Division 1 college baseball this year that hit .300. And they also hit 20 (home runs) and are six-foot fiveI don't think I had everything it took to take it to the next level. But I still love baseball. I'm a Detroit Tigers fan through and through." It was towards the end of college that Ballard's interested in music music slowly but surely moved him away from his beloved sport and into a new career. His most recent full-length, Sunshine & Whiskey, boasts the hit single, "Helluva Life," which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart. "Somewhere in my senior year, I would stay after practice and take a hundred ground balls or extra batting practice, hitting balls off the tee under the sun went down," he recalled. "All of a sudden, I started leaving practice early, and going to blues jams. "I started at that time writing songs. I'd never really written any songs before college. This music passion really started to well up inside of me. Where once I was just all about baseball, those things just kind of switched and baseball took a back seatmusic really took over." more on this story
But, lets be honest, all you're going to notice is the bag's large black and shiny eyelashes, which look very similar to Adele's own luscious lashes. Adele's new design is all part of FENDI's Peekaboo project, which collaborated with ten stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jerry Hall, model Cara Delevingne and Mick's daughter Georgia May Jagger to raise money for Kids Company, which provides support to vulnerable inner-city kids. Only two version of each bag exists, with one going to auction and the other being the property of the celebrity who designed it. So yes, in the name of charity, Adele and someone like you could be the only two people in the world with this specially made bag. Check out a photo of the Fendi purse here.
"As a long-time Harley-Davidson rider and enthusiast, I am beyond excited to have their support to ensure this ride is a success," the "Bottoms Up" singer said in a press release. Gilbert joined forces with Folds of Honor earlier this month and invited fans to submit names of military family and friends who have lost their lives while serving our country. During his motorcycle ride, those names submitted will appear on a tour bus that will follow Brantley's motorcycle ride. Just As I Am is Gilbert's third studio album, the followup to Halfway to Heaven, which was originally released in 2010. "This record is another chapter in my life," Gilbert told Radio.com. "It's going to pick up where the last one left off. And I think the songs on there do a really good job of telling [my] story." Stylistically, he continued, "it goes from one side of the spectrum to the other as far as rock, country, whatever you want to call it. Because I'm a Sour Patch Kid, I'm all over the place." Ultimately, he said, the songs "all come together and hold together pretty wellin my opinion. I'm really excited to see what people think about it." Complete dates for Brantley Gilbert's motorcycle ride are here.
One night during sound check, Bogguss and her band were having fun playing Haggard's "The Bottle Let Me Down." Putting their own spin on the track making it more bluesy, they decided on a whim to add it into their set that night and the crowd went wild. It was that moment that changed her initial idea to record an album of one or two Haggard cover songs to an entire album of his music. Lucky, released earlier this year, includes 12 Haggard originals that Bogguss put her own personal flavor on. During the recording process, she said she learned much more about his music, specifically the thoughtfulness and intricacies of his song structure. "Merle's stuff is so incredibly personal," Bogguss told Radio.com. "You believe every word he's saying. It sounds so easy like he just sat down and it all poured out of him in a stream of consciousness but when you take apart these phrases and these eloquent lyrics you know that this is not the case. You know that he's worked on this. He somehow crafts this song that sounds like he's just spitting it out right now. It's really inspirational as a songwriter, but also as a singer. I feel like I have this platform where I can swoop and soar and play with this." more on this story
The latest is, "Bullet In The Brain," which is not as violent as it sounds. The gentle strummer begins with Dan Auerbach before launching into a psychedelic breakdown that will have you tripping out. The performance itself is rather reserved for the guys, which seems to be their M.O. as of late. Don't believe us? Watch them perform "Fever" on the British television show, LaterWith Jools Holland here.
"I'm no Adele Dazeem," Garfield said, poking fun at John Travolta's pronunciation flub at the Oscars as he introduced Frozen star, Idina Menzel. It's true, Garfield is no Menzel (or even Dazeem, but he puts his heart and soul into his acoustic take on the theme song. Closing his eyes, he did his best Bob Dylan impression as host Jimmy Fallon looked on laughing and clapping in support. Fallon even grabbed a tambourine as The Roots played backup to help the actor perform for the first time in public. While his version doesn't hold a candle to The Ramones take on the classic theme, Garfield showed that he's got a good sense of humor. And of course, that he and his girlfriend, Emma Stone, must be a lot of fun at parties. Watch him perform the "Spider-Man Theme" here.
Built for Nelson in the 1980s, the bus was sale on Craigslist in Tyler, Texas through midnight Friday- the owner lists May 3 at 12am CT as the new cutoff time due to "the extremely high demand and the amount of offers being thrown at us for this bus." The listing notes that the current offer, as of 10am CT Friday morning, is $36,000 (UPDATE: the bid has since been raised to $52,000). The bus is listed as a 1983 Eagle, with a "92 Detroit diesel" engine, automatic transmission and a "15kW diesel generator." It gets 7 mpg, but hey, you're not buying this to pick up groceries or your kids from school (then againit beats the heck out of a Subaru). "The bus is in great working condition without any issues," the current owner writes. The real treats are on the inside, though, where it's been tricked out like an vintage Old West saloon. more details.
"This album is called Trance Mission - because it's filled with a selection of my favorite trance records from the last 25 years and it's been a bloody mission to finish," Oakenfold said in a press release, "but I like to think there's something for every one of my fans - including those who see me as a trance DJ, those that see me more lined with house and those that know me for my background in film and score. Let's cut to the chase - f- the boundaries, f- genres and the f- rules and regulations. Your Mission is to just listen." Working on the album for the last six months, Oakenfold stresses the fact that these new recordings aren't just remixes, but full-fledged cover versions, boiled down from an original shortlist of thirty tracks after combing through piles of old live sets and DJ mixes. more on this story
They told him they want the man who introduced them, Bravo's Andy Cohen, to be the one who marries them! Donnie explained, "He's supposed to be the officiator." Jenny admitted, "We haven't asked him yet," while Donnie added, "He's got to get ordained." Jenny told Ben they haven't yet picked a date. "We haven't planned anything, we keep going 'Do we want it this year or do we wait till next year?' We're so excited to marry each other that's what is so funny, we can't decide when It's like I want to drag it out, I want to look for the right dress, I want to experience the joy of planning a wedding and he's like let's do it, so we don't know when yet." McCarthy said they also can't decide if they want a big or small wedding, "We have like 600 family members, so we either spend our entire nest egg on the wedding or invite no one, elope, and buy a house I think our family would be okay with us eloping." more on this story
Bertinelli says of rumors, "Contrary to published reports I did not gain 50 pounds when I broke my foot, I gained like 12 to 15, I've already taken off 5 of them." Valerie saying she is back to working out as well, " I'm on the elliptical, I can't run yet." From a report by CBS Seattle, the store's grand opening offered myriad products including requisite Sub Pop music releases from such artists as Nirvana, Fleet Foxes and Mudhoney to a wide expanse of products that represent Seattle and the entire Northwest Pacific artistic community and beyond, including Sub Pop-branded coffee from local roasters, Lighthouse. "It's not just Sub Pop branded things. We didn't want to just put the Sub Pop logo on stuff," explained label employee, Sasha Barr. "We really wanted to kind of branch out and not only represent Sub Pop as a label, but Seattle and the Northwest. So kind of a good starting point for that is we have a lot of art prints, greeting cards, postcardswe hired Northwest artists from the Seattle and Portland area to start working with us on things. Jeff [Kleinsmith] and I are the main Sub Pop art directors and we designed a lot of the stuff in here, but we thought it would be good to try and bring in people from the area." "The first thing I sold this morning was a Sub Pop trucker hat, followed by a Father John Misty full-length," said Mark Pickerel, the store manager. Mudhoney frontman (and Sub Pop employee) Mark Arm came out for the store's grand opening, and said that book Mudhoney: The Sound & The Fury From Seattle was the "most intriguing" item he saw for sale at the shop. "I'm really curious about it," Arm said of the book that was released late last year. "I'd like to read it sometime." "We like the opportunity to have discussions with the tourists about what we love the most about Seattle and maybe give people some direction and guidance as they enter the city for the first time possibly," added Pickerel. "Hopefully you'll have an hour between flights the next time you're at Sea-Tac and you can actually stroll into our shop and see the history of Seattle's best music on display." more on this story
