Kurt Cobain Item From Nirvana's Unplugged Brings Big Money

Bruce Henne | 10-29-2019

(hennemusic) The sweater worn by Kurt Cobain during the taping of Nirvana's 1993 "MTV Unplugged In New York" performance sold for $334,000 at an auction in New York over the weekend.

Hosted by Julien's Auctions at the city's Hard Rock Cafe, Cobain's olive-green cardigan - unwashed and complete with a burn hole - topped its pre-event estimate of $200-300k as part of a two-day "Icons & Idols: Rock 'N' Roll" event that featured over 700 historical artifacts and memorabilia previously owned and used by Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Queen, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John and many others.

The auction took place just a week before Nirvana will release an expanded vinyl edition of "MTV Unplugged In New York" on November 1 to mark the project's 25th anniversary.

Recorded at Sony Music Studios on November 18, 1993 and first broadcast by MTV a few weeks later, the performance saw Nirvana deliver a 14-song set that mixed original tunes with tracks by David Bowie, Lead Belly and The Vaselines, and included a guest appearance on three Meat Puppets songs by band members Cris and Curt Kirkwood.

The Unplugged package was first issued six months after the death of leader Kurt Cobain; it debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 on its way to sales of more than 5 million copies in the country and a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
