Singer and songwriter Ben Rabb just released his brand new EP "Feel Me Fall" last Friday (July 14) and to celebrate we asked Ben to share the story behind the track "The Fight". Here is Ben with the story:
About a year and a half ago my wife and I got married and the next day we moved to Los Angeles from New York City. We were making big life changes and starting a new chapter. Around the same time, a close friend of mine was also making a big decision and going through a breakup with their longtime partner. Based on these two situations, I got stuck on the idea of being in a relationship where you spend more energy keeping things the same than fighting for something better together. Being open and honest is hard when it might upset someone you care about, but I think it's important in growing together.
After my friend's breakup, I got started on this song and was really on the fence whether to tell a story where the couple stays together or not. I ended up writing from the perspective of someone who is in a relationship and is ready to cut through the fear of ruining something, with the hope to build something better.
Relationships aren't easy, and a bad past experience can weigh heavy on what we do in current relationships, as it does in the song. I mostly wanted to tell a story where being open and honest is a risk, but it's a risk worth taking if you want something real.
