Indie artist Senator (Howard Baker) tells us about his brand new single "Lost Again" from their his forthcoming EP "Tiny Monsters," which is set to be released on March 10th. Here is the story:
Writing has always been my outlet to help me process my thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and I think that comes through in its truest form in "Lost Again." I often state that it is my most personal song on the album and that's because it gives the listener a glimpse into my mind at some of my lowest points in life. The song is about someone contemplating suicide, which is a very dark subject matter, but it's also sadly a subject that has been fairly prevalent in my life. I've had a surprising amount of people in my life that have chosen to end theirs, and the effects it has on the people that are left behind are very unique and difficult to process. A lot of unanswered questions and "what if's" that can drive a person mad. But when you are exposed to such an act, multiple times, it's hard not to think about why someone would choose to take their own life and the appealing aspects of such a decision. No more worrying, no more sadness, no more hopelessness, no more responsibility, etc. The idea of not having to deal with any of that anymore can be a very inviting thought to somebody. But I have been on the other end enough to see how it affects the people in your life that you leave behind. The pain, sorrow and guilt it leaves on your loved ones. Because I have witnessed and felt all of that I have developed a sheer disdain for the act and view it as one of the most selfish things a person can do. So I made a point to end the song with the person choosing life instead of death and choosing to see the beauty in life and not just the sh*tty parts.
"Lost Again" actually started out as a different song. Originally it was a song I wrote called, "Lost Soul." The connection between the two titles and common theme of someone being lost I only very recently realized, believe it or not. I was playing "Lost Soul" one day on my looping pedal, I used to perform solo and use a lot of looping pedals so I still do a lot of my writing using them, and I was messing around and decided to reverse the loop. When I did that I noticed that it actually sounded really cool. The reversed guitar parts had almost a bowed string instrument quality to them and it gave the song a new chord progression. So I took that reversed loop and wrote "Lost Again" on top of it. You can still hear the original reverse loop in the final version. It is one of my favorite songs on the album, the first one I recorded, and the one where I feel I truly found my sound as a musician on. I hope people appreciate it and enjoy it.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and watch the video here and learn more about the EP right here!
