Singled Out: The Walcotts' Should've Been Me

The Walcotts are gearing up to release their debut album "Let The Devil Win" and we asked Tom Cusimano to share with us the story behind their song "Should've Been Me." Here is the story:

We've never put out an album before, and this whole band didn't even start with the idea of putting out an album, touring or becoming a band. It started as a fun way to spend a Saturday with a friend from out of town who was visiting so we could see a Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band concert while he was in town.

"Should've Been Me" was written the evening of Monday April 23rd, 2012 - I know specifically as Sasha Smith& Jamison Hollister (co-writers) had come to my house that night so we could try and write something together. I shared a little section of a piece my friend Matt Kap (co-writer) and I had started on a couple days earlier and it just flowed from there. Sasha is a great rag-time/blues pianist, Jamison comes from a country and bluegrass background and I love varying influences, it was an easy song to write.

I remember when Jamison, Sasha and I finished writing the song; we recorded an acoustic version to my phone. I then asked them if they'd be interested in coming to the studio on Saturday to record some songs in the studio. They both agreed.

I know these dates specifically because on Friday April 27th 2012 my friend Jimm Olson (drummer in The Walcotts) was coming to visit me in LA to see the Springsteen show and hang out for the weekend. We had planned a day in the recording studio on April 28th, because, what better way to celebrate after a Springsteen show than to create some Rock'n'Roll yourself!

Those were the first of The Walcotts' sessionswe didn't have a namejust a few songs to record for the fun of it.

The story inside of "Should've Been Me" isn't a true story or anything, so interpretation is wide open. To me it is just a moment in time, a character with a unique perspective of entitlementor at least that is where we started off from, but songs are funny things, when you write one and share it with the world you'd think you might own it and the perspective, but you really don't. They have a life of their own. You feel they have a specific meaning or your remember what you were thinking when you wrote it, but then you find out someone else interprets it totally different and has an entirely different meaning to them, and that's great (Helter Skelter aside!)

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
