Singled Out: Of Clocks and Clouds' Another Life

Joe Salgo from Of Clocks and Clouds tells us about the song "Another Life" from their forthcoming album "Better Off" which is set to be released on July 15th. Here is the story:

Hi everybody- this is Joe Salgo from Of Clocks and Clouds. I'm here to tell you a little bit about our new song "Another Life". To say that this track is new isn't entirely accurate. Most of OCAC songs start out as electronic sketches that I write using a program called Propellerhead's Reason. Recently, I was digging through some old sessions and discovered the first demo version of Another Life from 2009.

See, for a long time our process of writing and recording songs came from bringing these Reason files to the studio. We would jam on them for a while and then begin arranging them and eventually tracking. I remember coming up with the piano parts way back in 2009 thinking it kind of sounded like "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John. It had this fun, upbeat, bouncy feel. This was years before I started OCAC, so it just stayed tucked away in one of the folders on my laptop.

After Ross and I finished the first OCAC record "YOU" in 2014, we delved into these old folders looking for new songs to sink our teeth into. When I played the Reason file for Ross he immediately was hooked. He prompted me to write a bridge and then we started jamming on it. Our bassist at the time, played the chorus with a staccato and punk feel and that's when the song really took off in my opinion.

I felt I always knew that the chorus should be: "Maybe we'll meet again- in another life." But I didn't realize that my life experiences would make that more real than I would've hoped. In 2013 I married my Colombian girlfriend to help her get her citizenship. Two months later our relationship disintegrated in a drunken, ugly fight. Needless to say, I was heartbroken and embarrassed. The lyrics to the song - and much of the new album are about the things I went through during the time immediately after- shock, anger, uncertainty, and ultimately acceptance and understanding that there is light beyond the darkness.

So "Another Life" has this snarky edge which is clouded with pain:

"Now that you're on you're own you can leave me far behind,
Chase your treasure, choose your pleasure tonight

And maybe we'll meet again in another life."

Often times, music is the only way we have to deal with our pain. Probably 100% of the time for me...so far so good.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
