Toronto rapper Rel McCoy has released his new album "Gas Money" and to celebrate we asked him to tell us about the songs "Ain't Yours" and "The Payoff". Here are the storires:
Ain't Yours: There's a rapper that I do some recording with in my studio who makes "special cookies" (if you get what I mean). One day after a studio session, he left me a small bag of these tasty treats. About a week later when the sun was smiling and the warm weather was sure to come to a close for the year, I decided to walk to the bank make a deposit. I hit the local pub for a pint on my way back, and found one of these special cookies in my shorts pocket. I washed it down with the last of my beer while taking in the tail end of a rugby game with a few of the pub locals. By the time I had walked back to the studio, my creativity seemed to be amazingly "turned up" 3 hours later, Ain't Yours was produced, written and recorded. What a day.
The Payoff: In January of this year, I hit up Fresh Kils studio (downtown Toronto) to rehearse for some live videos we were scheduled to shoot. When I arrived, Kils told me about a youtube clip containing a beat made by 9th wonder. Earlier that day he and DJ Uncle Fester (The Extremities) had been arguing over if the sample could have been chopped up and used in a better way. The discussion got so heated that they ended up finding the same sample and creating their own beats from it. This was all to settle the argument, and to see how their "chops" would stand up to 9th's creation. When I heard it, I liked Kils version of the sample chop so much, I immediately took his beat home and wrote verses to a song that turned out to be "The Payoff" on my new record.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
