Motorhead, Speedealer, Nashville Pussy, & Fu-Manchu

When and Where? 5/23/00 @ The Galaxy Theatre Santa Ana, Ca

This is what I was waiting for all along. It never really went away, but for some reason it had to take a break and sneak up behind me and crush my skull with a pipe wrench.  And I dug every minute of it!  Motorhead w/Nashville Pussy, Fu-Manchu, and Speedealer (formerly REO Speedealer).  Where has there been a tour like this as of lately?  First up was Speedealer from Dallas, Texas.  This band was great and I know they're going places.  I didn't have a bio on the band, but I can tell you for sure, they play music like we like it, Hard, Fast and Fierce!  They've got a good combination of Ramones Chainsaw guitar going, that they like to mix up, and/or breakdown or slowdown with that classic Sabbath-y, Heavy kind of riffing. The vocals weren't up to snuff, probably due to inadequate or no sound check, but everything I could understand coming from vocalist/guitarist Jeff Speadealer I dug. The songs go over great live and there seems to be real humor in most of their songs, which seem to be mostly about racing hot rods and slamming dope.  If you want to be thoroughly entertained, see these guys live.  In the meantime go buy the CD.

Next up was the band that I had been hearing so much about.  Fu-Manchu.  These guys have been compared to everyone from Black Sabbath to Jeff Spicoli.  The songs were hard and heavy and whatever they lifted from any of their heavy metal heroes, they borrow their speed from some obvious punk and hardcore influences.  Not a slow song in the set, and that was fine with me.  The crowd was into it, giving the Ronnie James Dio salute back to the band along with screaming, hollering and general chaos.  Guitarist Bob Balch and Drummer Brant Bjork(formerly of Kyuss) were the standouts of this band.  Balch has that less is more guitar style that works killer with the bands songwriting.  No shred guitar, just playing what sounds best for the song.  Bjork is just like Animal from the Muppets.  Hardhitting and doesn't miss a beat, Awesome!

First I want to get out of the way that I was into Nashville Pussy and I went out and bought the CD over a year ago.  How nice it is to be assured once again that there is still a band out there playing music the way I like it, and as a bonus has Corey Parks and Ruyter Suys, who look so good doing it.  Even when things don't go just right, this band never fails to kick ass and leave us fans wrecked and wanting more.  After 10 minutes of not being able to get his mic to stop electrocuting him, Blaine Cartwright Yells into the mic, "F*** it! We're Nashville Pussy! And this s*** hurts!"  That's when the mayhem starts, and this band does not let up until they know they've hurt you and made you like it.  There is not a woman out there who plays guitar like Ruyter Suys!  She plays better than most guys out there these days!  The set included favorites from "Let them eat Pussy" as well as the new album "High as Hell" (out now).  Drummer Jeremy Thompson sets the pace with his relentless drumming and everyone else does a great job of keeping up.  This band is just a big ol' hunk of pure TALENT!  See them live and go out and buy all the Nashville Pussy stuff you can! And Blaine, or Pat the roadie! I need a 3xl t-shirt!

MOTORHEAD! MOTORHEAD! MOTORHEAD! MOTORHEAD!

YEEEEAAHH!! As Butthead would say "THE RULERS OF ALL THAT WHICH DOES NOT SUCK!!"  This is the band that can do no wrong in my eyes.  This is the band that has influenced so many other bands and it's fans too.  Motorhead is in my blood and Motorhead has always been, since the first time I heard Ace of  Spades almost 20 years ago.  The line-up has changed over the years but Motorhead will always be about the songs, and what they represent.  The current line-up of Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mickey Dee pummeled us with songs off the new album "We Are Motorhead" along with songs drawn from the 20 or so Years worth of Motorhead Archives.  You've got to hand it to Lemmy, no one else can regurgitate their songwriting so many times over and still make it sound so new.  Crowd favorites on this night were Bomber, Iron Fist and the encore Ace of  Spades, followed by a medley of parts from about 10 different Motorhead songs with no vocals.  Pure Thrash!!! ALL HAIL MOTORHEAD!!!
