Immediately and without a doubt, I knew I was witness to something new and not just the same old, same old. Until now I'd only heard of this band, but I'm telling you, the effect of IGNITE live, and right there in your face is absolutely devastating! Hardcore? punk? Yes, and yes except for the fact that IGNITE sounds so much different than all those bands in the same musical genre that come off sounding like Pennywise, early Offspring, Bad Religion, or any of the early Epitaph record label bands. Let me remind you that IGNITE is not part of the recent Punk Rock Revival. They've been around since about 1993 and their following in Europe, and here in the States is Humongous. This band is as Hardcore as they come, and more talented than the rest. Singer Zoli Teglas actually "sings" these songs. Drummer Craig Anderson's drumming is precise, yet brutal. Bassist Brett Rasmussen's bass thumps and growls. And Guitar player Brian Balchack's static charged power chording lays perfectly on top of all that powerful low end punch. Catch IGNITE live when they come to your City, State or Country. And, buy their excellent new release "A Place Called Home", out now on TVT Records. And for even more of an ear-full, and an eye-full from IGNITE, log onto their site @ www.ignitemusic.net.
What could I tell you about the MISFITS that you probably don't already know or that you probably haven't already heard somewhere else? First of all, I made a bet with someone that I wouldn't mention Danzig or compare him with Michale Graves more than once in this review. What's the use? And why would I waste your time and mine? The MISFITS history is, for those who don't know. Glenn left the band, and in the time between him leaving and Michale Graves joining, the MISFITS never officially broke up. How could anything ever break up this Army of Psychotic Mutants? In the time that passed before Graves came on board, the MISFITS put out a bunch of really cool greatest hits type releases. Seeing the MISFITS live was what got me into them more than anything else they ever did. To me, their songs pretty much all sound the same with a few exceptions here and there. A little doomsday chanting of the oh oh oh oh's, and then Doyle's Gazillion Watts of guitar kicking in at a thousand miles an hour. So what's so bad about that? I can stand it for two hours straight, especially when they've got the coolest stage show around to back it all up. They've got Pus Head the Fiend and Frankenstein's monster beating the crap out of each other. They've got Frankenstein beating the crap out of Graves. They've got Chud back there beating the crap out of his gargantuan drums, and himself. They also have the two scariest s.o.b.'s who ever walked this planet on bass and guitar. Jerry Only and Doyle are like two separate entities that share one f***ed up brain! And that f***ed up brain says, "Wake the Dead, and Kill them again!" Yep kids! The MISFITS are on their eternal search and destroy mission, so fathers lock up your daughters and farmers lock up your sheep! And the rest of you who think you're as sick as the MISFITS, sign the release of liability forms, or get a note from your Mom, and go see them live! And check out www.misfits.com for really cool MISFITS stuff.
