Hollywood Superstars in itself is a concept band. Built around the character/ lead vocalist Shermy Sheldon who is said to be the grandson of blacklisted vaudevillian, Shemp Sheldon. The basic premise is one we know all too well, the downfall of child actors. With Hollywood Superstars Shermy Sheldon played the character "Huff" on "Harlem Huffington", a rich kid sent to live with his family maid in Harlem. According to legend, seven episodes were shot and only three exist today. The story of Shermy is the story of a lot of child television stars, after their shows were cancelled their struggle with fame, not being able to find work and in some cases drugs and crime. It's a story line right out of the tabloids and is also the perfect backdrop for a punk album!
Ok you know the story line but what about
the music? It's actually really cool, a great collection of raw edged punk
and hard rock. It's not only humorous, entertaining and at times sad but
it's just an all around great album if you take it for the music alone
and leave the concept out of the picture. There is an added bonus; a killer
cover of Randy Newman's "I Love L.A." mixed with The Doors "L.A. Women".
Whether the "concept" behind this band will make them superstars or cause
people to dismiss them without listening to the music, remains to be seen
but the music does stand on it's own, so if you're looking for a cool hard
rockin' punk album, check these guys out. If the story line intrigues you
than you should check it out as well.
