The debut release from Mercyside entitled
"The Truth Is" could actually be a good listen with a little reworking.
Jennifer Brunetti's lead vocals have the haunting qualities that of singer
Poe or vintage Sarah McLaughlin. The track listing makes this album a hard
listen. By the end of track ten, the whole album sounds the same. All slower,
more mellow tracks are sectioned from tracks one through six. Then out
of nowhere track seven, "Time's Fool" contains something very different
from all other tracks. The Beatle-esque
Jellyfish oriented track catches the ear
because it is like nothing you've heard on the album up until this point.
From that track until the end of the album the songs are much more upbeat.
If the songs would have been more randomly placed, the album might not
have dragged along as much. There are some really good ideas that float
through the album such as use of the spoken word, and the occasional Moby
like techno influence. If those aspects of the group's musicianship can
be incorporated a bit better, this album along with future releases might
be worthy of a more serious listen.
