Mike Brandon's new book "Unchained: The Story of Mike Starr and His Rise and Fall in Alice in Chains" takes the reader behind the scenes with Mike Starr and tells the story of his rise to stardom and subsequent battle with heroin that caused him to make a fateful decision to quit the legendary group.

In Unchained Brandon abandoned the traditional biography style and instead wrote the book based around several interviews with Mike Starr, his friends and family. Within the pages we get a closer look at how Alice in Chains was formed, the inner politics of the band and how Mike and AIC vocalist Layne Staley's got hooked on heroin.  It's an interesting read for anyone who is interested in AIC but is also delivers a potent message about where drug abuse can lead.

Some of the most powerful stories in the book revolve around the infighting that led Starr to quit the group as well as the recounting of a Starr and the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain private heroin party in a hotel bathroom where they took turns shooting each other up while discussing the music business. The book also explores the early grunge scene and how an international music movement was spawned from the halls of the "Music Bank" in a suburb of Seattle.

From their humble origins and dreams of be a speed-metal band dressed in drag to their meteoric rise to stardom to the political power plays within the group that led to their demise and finally to Mike Starr's battle with Mr. Brownstone, Unchained tells the story from Mike's perspective and those who love and know him best.
