When you think of Arista Records the first thing you think of is Clive Davis and his major success at breaking multi-platinum adult pop artist like Barry Manilow and Whitney Houston. Well it's a brand new day at Arista, Clive has gone on to other things and so has his former label. It's hard to imagine getting farther away from the likes of Barry and Whitney than Arista's latest signing-From Zero! Their progressive nu-metal sound meets power industrial is a great marriage between the two parallel styles. Let's face it nu-metal isn't known for its intricacy. From Zero shatters that fact by putting a progressive spin on the nu-metal sound while mixing it up with the industrial sound that Nine Inch Nails put on the map. Vocalist Jett isn't content with copying Layne Staley's style or resorting to rapping, he has the pipes and he is more than happy to use them. Guitarist's Joe (Bag o' Donuts) Pettinato and Pete Capizzi don't go overboard on drop tuned power chords either. They throw some nice changes and licks into the mix to keep things interesting while providing some progressive panache. It's heavy but at times can sound down right funky like on the prechorus to "Erase. The real power behind the sound comes from the rhythm section who aggressively ply the songs with a biting yet moving under current.
The bottom line- From Zero's One Nation
has balls while at the same time delivering style. One warning through,
after you get a taste you will have a hard time going back to the typical
cookie cutter nu-metal or mallcore. These guys show us how it should be
done!
