The Australian metal band Jerk has taken the world by storm. Their debut album entitled When Pure is Defiled, is a healthy mix of industrial and numetal -with grinding B-tuned guitars, a singer reminiscent of an angry Marilyn Manson on crack and an awesome stage presence Jerk has scored a record deal with Sony/Epic record's and a formula for success.

With When Pure is Defiled topping Sanity Australia's alternative music charts, I was dying to see what the hype was all about. The band's first single I Hate People Like That' paints a rather eerie image of the band, the film clip complete with pierced, bald and slightly insane vocalist BG screaming into the face of what seems to be an evil which most can barely fathom - lawyers.

The song brings a fresh, tight new feel to metal. A rather abnormal guitar riff and funky bass line accompanies a pounding drumbeat. The song was an obvious first-single, with my only qualm lying in the final thirty seconds wherein BG mutters, "they say life's what you make it" in a rather young-Jon-Davis voice.

The bands second single however, "Just What You Need" is somewhat less suitable for radio airplay. This song better defines the band, haunting vocals and a violent mantra of a chorus leaving you feeling empowered and (as Fred says) "lookin' for somethin' to break".

From thereon the band moves more into an Industrial Metal groove but not in the traditional double-bass sense. The band does however share a similar guitar style with the genre. The smallest comparison can be made to Static-X's Machine, but Jerk really do stand apart from the pack. More industrial songs such as Disintegrating, Say It and Wrong better define the heavier side of the band.

The Hobo's judgment? Four-outta-five stars for the band's debut effort, and a strong recommendation to catch the band onstage an experience not to be missed. For all the Aussie fans Jerk will be certainly put down on next years Metal For The Brain. Check out the clip at A.T.M. and lemme know what you think. The album is best played loud, real loud.
