After listening to Slipknot's Limited
Edition Digi-pack, which includes all of the tracks on the bands 1999 debut
release, plus six tracks previously unavailable in the U.S., including
live tracks, remixes, and some very heavy European B-sides, you may want
to go out and terrorize your local bible study group. All humor aside;
these nine Iowa native musicians crank out plenty of high octane in your
face Ultra-Violence on this disk. The onslaught starts off with the
help of famed producer Ross Robinson's killer studio expertise, making
this CD most definitely one of the hardest releases from the "nu-metal"
batch of bands.
Combining down-tuned guitars with intricate blast beats and mixed vocals ranging from hardcore to somewhat melodic overtones makes this CD worth checking out. I felt that tracks like SIC, Surfacing and Diluted offer mixed styles of hard hitting grind-core like, groove laden rhythms with plenty of dance parts for all you pit warriors. The CD's music has an intensity that would be justified by having equally intense lyrics that would make the band even more dimensional. Hopefully for future efforts they will be able to mature as songwriters to compliment their ferocious sound.
I personally do not like some of these
other new bands out now trying to combine rap/metal or whatever that "nu-metal"
s*** is. Out of those ashes, Slipknot have my admiration due to the
fact they can truly pull off aggressive music and mix in other styles that
sound unlike other bands. This CD rocks, and if you new-school kids
want to hear some heavy bands that have paved the way for bands like Slipknot,
I recommend Carcass or Napalm Death for your grind-core fix.
