Somewhere in Hollywood, someone at Miramax has figured it out.  Girls love Gwynth Paltrow.  Seeing that it would be mostly girls dragging their boyfriends to the romantic comedy starring Ben Affleck and every girl's hero, Gwynth, they decided to come up with a soundtrack that girls could buy to drive their boyfriends crazy, or perhaps it was to expand their minds.

Okay, not really, but close.  This is NOT one for the rockers, however.  Or anyone who likes loud guitars and drums.  You won't find many here.  Taking it for what it is, read:  POP, there are standouts on this soundtrack that do make it worth the payola.  In a lineup chock full with pop stars and women, understandably the album takes a more laidback, emotional, keyboardy approach.  Not that the music isn't good....Delierium's "Silence"stands out as THE track you could leave on repeat with it's soaring melodies and Sarah McLachlan's never disappointing, haunting voice.  Beth Orton's and Dido's voices sooth and carry you away, while legend Carly Simon's remixed track is pretty trippy, especially for those of us who can still (barely) remember the original "You're So Vain." Even one of the album's rare male vocalized tracks by Nick Garrisi is more of a poppy power ballad, but sounding half Eagles/ half Bryan Adams, it manages to move.  Angie Aparo's track, the other male appearance was great too, especially when I was expecting it to be another female sung track.  WIth other appearances by Sophie B. Hawkins, Morcheeba and Leigh Nash with Sixpence None The Richer, this is a CD that won't go over Americans' heads, yet will satisfy those with more European tastes, especially the crazy direction the last track by BT, "Never Gonna Come Back Down"takes you.

If you're looking for a CD to pop in and just leave on for good laidback background music, this wouldn't disappoint.  Don't be surprised if you find yourself grooving, even if it is packaged as "chick" music.  Try not to be too scared, guys, you might actually like this one.  Don't worry, we won't tell a soul.
