Billy Crain - Family Matters

.
Billy Crain is likely better known to the insider music world, than the wider public. He's toured and/or recorded with such high profile artists as Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain and The Outlaws. His CD Family Matters is a little bit country, a little big classic rock, and it's a good one.

Crain has already released multiple CDs on his own, and Family Matters only adds to this respected musician's legacy. While there are country and rock influences running through this release, songs such as "Dark House" and "Lucky Penny" also incorporate some Celtic elements. The latter speaks to the troubling social ill of mass shootings by telling the story of a young child tragically gunned down during one of these all too common incidents.

The album's title track is driven by a percussive groove that sounds a little like a Bruce Hornsby-styled song. With it, Crain uses 'family matters' to talk about matters of family, but also to express just how much families matter.

Crain may combine multiple musical genres into his musical mix, but whenever he sings the country in him comes out bold and strong. He's a country boy, no matter how he's surrounded sonically at any given moment.

The impression left with Family Matters is one of sincere love and empathy. Crain is not just making music to appear cool; he creates this music because he truly cares.
