U.D.O. - Decadent

American hard rock and metal fans got their first taste of the vocal work of U.D.O. front man Udo Dirkschneider back in the early '80s when he was the singer for Accept. The singer formed U.D.O. in 1987 and they've been putting out speedy, melodic metal ever since, and for those not yet hip to the German band, it's time to get on board. Sounding like what Bon Scott (AC/DC) might sound like if he were alive today, Dirkschneider has one of the great rock and roll voices of all time, full of impishness and with a seasoned resonance that makes the listener imagine that he gargles with gasoline. Particularly AC/DC-esque is the title track, and while fans will enjoy singing along to a chorus of "We are so decadent," the song is not actually promoting debauchery. Never mind that though; this is get-a-buzz-and-let-loose music. If there's a hellion inside you waiting to get out it'll be cackling with joy throughout, like the maniacal laughter at the beginning of "Mystery," and reveling in the fiery two-guitar madness of "Meaning of Life." "Under Your Skin" is so fast it's like the band is hot on the tail of Motorhead; "Untouchable" on the other hand rocks at the pace of many a classic rock radio favorite while Dirkschneider issues anthemic words meant to be sung along to, preferably with fist in air. U.D.O. have sold millions of records in their lengthy career and this solid effort could add significantly to that total, especially if American metal heads give it the listen it deserves. The album will be released in North American on February 3, 2015.
