The Society Islands - The Big Sleep

.
It's unlikely many will guess that The Society Islands, the name under which Boris Rogowski performs, is a Cologne, Germany act. He instead sounds like a classic American power-pop artist and The Big Sleep (the name of a classic American film, by the way) is chockfull of fantastic melodies and smart lyrics. It's more American than most homegrown music.

These songs are all fantastic, even though "From My Mouth into Yours" is a little on the grotesque side. (Really? Do we need a song about this?) This 8-song project begins with the delightful "Square 1," which describes all of our lives at one time or another - the need to get back to the start, back to 0. Although the track is a bit on the jazzy side, Rogowski's voice ranges from an Elvis Costello-like scratchiness, to a really pretty falsetto. Musically, there is even a little banjo, which may sound a little strange but actually fits the arrangement.

With "In the Water," Rogowski revs it up with some lightly rollicking guitar rock. "Run for My Money" applies affected vocals to create a slightly psychedelic Beatles feel. The project closes with an equally Beatle-y track called "Sunday." The latter is also a bit of a rocker, even though this project mostly rocks us gently.

If all you think about is Krafwerk when you consider Germany, The Society Islands may cause you to makes some serious reconsiderations of your German music knowledge.
