Steel Panther - Balls Out

If you consider that the term "rock and roll" is actually a euphemism for having sex it shouldn't come as any surprise that sex is a favorite topic for many rock and roll bands. It's just a matter of how in-your-face the references are. It might take a few listens before you realize what the Who's "Mary Anne With the Shaky Hand" is all about but you can knowingly snicker the instant you hear ZZ Top's "Tube Snake Boogie." And AC/DC has virtually made a career out of singing about sex by employing easy to interpret double entendres. The music of Steel Panther though is real sex rock, so salacious that before listening you just might want to fit condoms over your ears. Do you think you can listen to a song like "17 Girls In a Row" without catching something? Fortunately Steel Panther is extremely witty with their sleaze and not just gratuitously naughty. Puns run rabid on "Just Like Tiger Woods" where singer Michael Starr cautions that "Your balls will wind up in the rough" if you go around "Filling all the divots in the neighborhood." And the band can play too; "Just Like Tiger Woods" rocks like a Def Leppard hit and much of the album is radio-ready melodic rock (well maybe not radio-ready according to Mr. Censor) Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and Extreme's Nuno Bettencourt guest on the not-so-delicately titled Jackyl/Motley Crue mash-up "It Won't Suck Itself" and comedian Dane Cook intros the album with a spoken tale of a futuristic horndog although his voice is (probably wisely) distorted beyond recognition. And "Critter," well, I can't even tell you what that song's about. If you're not easily offended you'll enjoy this album at least a few times through. If you're a bit of a prude go ahead and listen anyway; it won't kill ya. And if you're a filthy *#@! of a %*@#, bless your heart, Balls Out is what you've been waiting for. As the band themselves indicate in the lyrics of "Supersonic Sex Machine," they're ready to (f-bomb) you all night long.
