John Cale & Band Live DVD

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
It's ironic that John Cale, one of the two main personalities (the other being Lou Reed) behind the Velvet Underground, one of the most influential bands of the past half century, get's mistaken for respected but not-so-influential singer/songwriter J.J. Cale. Cale's lengthy set begins with "Autobiography," wherein he addresses any confusion, "I never wrote a song called "Cocaine;" didn't write no "After Midnight." As is his wont, Cale performs the song without any hint of humor, just like his performance art take on "Heartbreak Hotel" later in the show. Cale and his band are clearly having a hot night, though, playing definitive versions of "Evidence," "Fear is a Man's Best Friend," "Paris 1919" and a take on Velvet's favorite "Waiting For the Man." This 17-song show from 1984 goes a long way in preserving Cale's reputation as an intense, mysterious genius but the included bonus acoustic show from the previous year, while just as stimulating, finds Cale in a much more relaxed state.
