David's hits: "Changes", "7 Eleven, "Work It Out", "Lost in Acid", "Amazonia" as well as remixes for David Guetta, Testo & Nelly Furtado, Bob Sinclar, Spanish Pop Diva Marta Snchez and the American Idol Blake Lewis has established Tort amongst the elite.
David Tort's music is included in the soundtrack of several MTV USA's reality shows, some television channels and may also be found in compilations by Ministry of Sound, Azuli, Yos***oshi, Defected, Cream and more.
Recently, David signed a deal with Joia Records/Nero Recordings owned by Luciano Ingrosso with the first title, 'Chase The Sun', having swiftly reached, as of the time of this interview, #4 on Beatport's Main Top 100 Chart, while garnering support and accolades from David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Dirty South and even Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1!
I recently caught up with David, and he wanted to share with all of you a bit on his background, the current scene, his relationship with Norman Doray and Joia Records and, of course, to speak about his new instant classic 'Chase The Sun' (w/ Norman Doray)
.
MM: David, nice to speak with you again. Could you let the readers know you as to how you began in House Music, and did you have musical experience before you began as a DJ or Producer?
DT: I began as a dj in the year 1988 when I just finished school, then I was playing acid house, new beat, ebm, tehcno and finally i was into house music around 1998 I was playing with some old drum machines and synths in an Atari based system during the 90s but I released my first record in 2000. when I got my first Apple computer with logic...my life changed completely!
MM: Apple saves the day yet again! What do you prefer more, producing or djing?
DT: I love both. I can not produce if I'm not DJing -- how can i see in the studio what the people want on the dance floor?
Producing is my passion, i need to make music to feel that I'm alive, is like breathing to me. by other hand I've born as a DJ, you can not wake up one day and say "I'm gonna be an international DJ". That came with our DNA, and the clubs are my other 50%, I prefer to die if one day i have to stop playing music.
MM: I couldn't agree more with your last statement! I was actually reminiscing last night about my first guitar lesson at age 14 and that I had no idea I would end up as an International DJ/Producer either -- some things are just meant to be! Now, you have a new track with French DJ/Producer Norman Doray, 'Chase The Sun' on Nero Recordings, part of Joia Records owned by Luciano Ingrosso -- how did the collaboration with Norman start?:
DT: We were kind of online friends and we've met each other in person in Ibiza last year, one day we had the idea to try to make a track together, we thought that our styles producing can fit you never know if it will be good vibes in the studio working with others, and with Norman it was like if we were working together our whole life, he came to Barcelona few days and we were totally in the groove since the first minute. We had so much fun working together, going to dinner and then he came to my gig on Friday and we finished our meeting testing the track on that show, the reaction was massive and we popped a champagne bottle, or two...
We did a nice track and we are so proud of it and that the Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Dirty South and many more loved it and they are supporting the track... but the most important thing is that Norman and me are close friends now and forever.
MM: That's Really Cool -- as for Luciano Ingrosso and Joia/Nero, how did they become aware of the song and what is it about Luciano and Joia/Nero that separates them as a clear leader in House Music from other labels?:
DT: My music manager Cesar Lores (Blanco Y Negro) sent the track to Luciano, and he was totally in the track since the first time. i released my single "Lost In Acid" on Joia 2 years ago, and was one of the big steps that pushed my career to where i am right now, i know with Luciano we are in a good hands, he has a special ear for music, and we said straight "just go ahead with it!" -- you can see today it's number 4 on overall Beatport chart!!
MM: I agree. There has been a lot of recent press from Joia/Nero Artists whom have mentioned Luciano Ingrosso as instrumental to their continued success in their careers, and most recently: Tristan Garner ('F***in Down'), Avicii/Tim Berg ('Alcoholic') and Marc Mysterio ('Shout It Out'). These are all artists with a very different sound, especially with my record being on the commercial tip of things. How would you describe in your own words as an industry observer/Nero's apparent openness to different styles of house music and as to how each of the aforementioned artists have benefited from working with Luciano Ingrosso and Joia/Nero?:
DT: I think Luciano Ingrosso just wants to release good tracks. It doesn't matter what kind of music it is, if its just good music with fresh sound and works on the dance floor, it's a cool track for him to release it on his labels.
I was a big fan of Joia/Nero since it's creation -- the sound was fresh and totally different from what we had that years in the music scene!
I don't need to say this to make him happy, honestly I think that the club scene wouldn't be the same without this guy.
MM: Agreed and well said. I hope that some day someone writes a book on Luciano because people will be surprised at how instrumental he really is in the development and continued success of quality house music on the global scene. It was a pleasure to speak with you David, always great to hear from our DJ Brethren. Best of Luck.
