Schenker Barden Acoustic Project - Gipsy Lady (180 Gram vinyl)

.
The Schenker referred to here is guitarist Michael Schenker, the long-ago member of the Scorpions and the namesake of the long-running Michael Schenker Group. Barden is Gary Barden, the singer who appeared on quite a few of the early MSG albums and then again last year on MSG's In the Midst of Beauty. Neither of these guys has ever attained the mega-success that many of their hard-rocking peers have and you probably wouldn't expect that to happen with an acoustic release. You would be correct. You know the part of a hard rock show where the main guys come out with just acoustic guitars and sing a quiet number? The part of the show where a few girls swoon but most everyone else heads to the restroom? That pretty much sums up the forgettable content of Gipsy Lady. Sure these guys are vets and the music is note-perfect but Schenker never really shows off his talent, choosing instead to stay reined-in with concise solos. Barden has had far more exciting outings too; he's at his best when pushed into an Axl Rose-like frenzy but these songs just don't allow for that. There is only one tune here that lives up to the potential that these guys have; "Can't Live on Love Alone." The song has a great hook with layered vocals and a female touch added by a backup singer named Pearl. A few more like that and this album would be worthy but as it stands this one is for very hard core Schenker (and Barden) fans only.
