Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson - Relator (7 inch single)

.
"Relator" is a brief 2 minute taste of Break Up, the upcoming full album from Yorn and Johansson. Lyrically the song seems to presage the break-up referred to in the album title as Pete and Scarlett take turns singing the refrain "You can leave when you want to" to each other. But the song is totally bereft of animas---the personalities the duo portrays here are still very much enjoying their relationship even as they acknowledge that it's doomed. Johansson takes the first verse and while the listener may have her sexy movie star image in mind as the song begins they'll quickly hear that she's not all breathless whispers here; it's more like she's the girl-next-door having a good time while it lasts. Yorn, who echoes the sentiment, is of course a known entity while Johansson as a singer is not even though this is not her first outing as a vocalist, having put out the rather non-descript Anywhere I Lay My Head last year. This pairing with Yorn brings out the best qualities of Johansson's voice and it'll be interesting to see if the rest of Break Up explores her soulful side, something only hinted at in this slightly bluesy mid-tempo shuffle. The B-side of this single doesn't feature Johansson; it's a demo version of a somewhat schmaltzy Yorn composition called "I Don't Know What to Do." This single comes in a sepia-tone picture sleeve. .
